Taylor Fritz ended his 2025 season with a round-robin loss at the ATP Finals, going down against Alex De Minaur. The defeat has ruled him out of the semifinal contention and he will now be looking to get some rest after a hectic year.
Speaking to the media after the match, Fritz opened up about the busy tennis calendar. He discussed the extended two-week schedule for Masters 1000 events at length, sharing mixed feelings about the format.
The American said playing a Masters 1000 event over two weeks helped him this year as it gave him, and by extension other players, more time to recover after each match. He went as far as saying that he would not have made it to the Canadian Masters semifinal had it not been for the off days in between.
"My standpoint was I didn't actually know what to expect when we switched to the two-week Masters," Taylor Fritz said. "For me, as I said before, I didn't necessarily hate it this year because I felt like I needed a lot of times that day off in order to play the next day."
"I wouldn't have made the semis of Toronto this year if we played back to back every single day. My knee would not have been able. I couldn't have kept up with playing every day. In that aspect I think it helped me," he added.
Fritz, however, was still of the opinion that a condensed one-week schedule works better in general. By ensuring that a tournament is completed in one week, he said, the calendar frees up a lot of time in between different events, giving players time to rest. He was quick to add an asterisks to his statement, saying the condensed one-week schedule should not translate into another tournament being scheduled in its place.
"My stance has always kind of been I'd prefer one week, but if we're just going to use that time that we saved and it not being a two-week, to just play other tournaments, then what's the point?" Taylor Fritz questioned.
"I'd love for the Masters to be condensed back to what they were to create more weeks off in the calendar for the players. But if we're going to condense the two weeks back to one, then just add another tournament the next week, then I don't see what the point is really," he added.
Taylor Fritz ends season with loss to Alex De Minaur

Taylor Fritz’s 7-6(3), 6-3 defeat to Alex De Minaur meant that he was no longer in the running for the knockout rounds at the ATP Finals. He will nonetheless end another successful season inside the top-10 of the world rankings.
The American lifted two titles this year, both on grass. He was first victorious at the Stuttgart Open and followed it up with another trophy at Eastbourne just days later.
At the Grand Slams, Fritz made the second week during Wimbledon and the US Open. He reached the semifinal at the former tournament and the quarterfinal at the latter.
