Serena Williams revealed the moment that made her a fan of the track and field athlete, Sha'Carri Richardson. The Williams sisters have joined forces to start a new podcast, Stockton Street, which launched on September 17.
In the latest episode of the podcast, the sisters invited track and field stars Gabby Thomas and Richardson for a conversation. While talking about various aspects of their lives and careers, Serena revealed the moment that made her a fan of Richardson.
Talking about the moment when Richardson took off her wig during a 100m race at the 2023 US Track and Field Championships, Serena Williams said:
"My favorite Sha'Carri moment was the running and you took the wig off and you still ran. And you won. Girl, it was early. It was early in your career. I think that's when I became like a super fan." (54:00 onwards)
Opening up about the story behind this moment, the sprinter said:
"When I pulled my, it was an orange wig. Yes, it was 2023. I had to think about it. I was like, I've only done it once. So that moment really was just, it was a fun moment again, going back to how we spoke. Yes, I planned that."
During that episode, Thomas revealed a heated fight incident where she was punched in the face by her training partner.
Serena Williams opened up about the success of Athlos NYC and the rise in women's sports
During the second iteration of the Athlos NYC this year, Serena Williams was in a media conversation at Icahn Stadium, where she opened up about the Athlos NYC's success. Talking about her husband, Alexis Ohanian's business acumen, she said that she was impressed with how his idea has created a major impact in the track and field community.
"Well, I've learnt don't doubt Alexis because he builds businesses and he makes it great. We have seen what he did with soccer and so many other people that he believed in and how it changed their trajectory, and so, when he told me about wanting to build something in track and field, I, of course, loved it, supported it, and then I thought, 'Wow, why hasn't this been done before?' You know what I mean.
"You know what it is happening now, and better late than never. These women, these athletes, deserve this, and they deserve this for years and years," Serena Williams said, via X. (17:40 onwards)
