Fans and the tennis community alike were left dejected after Serena Williams denied any intention of returning to the sport. Rumors of her potential comeback started doing the rounds on Tuesday, November 2. Her reinstation into the testing pool of the International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) was the spark that lit the fire.

Retired players must register themselves for anti-doping tests with the ITIA at least six months prior to their comeback. With anticipation building up regarding her hypothetical return, Williams took to social media to set the record straight. She stated she has no intention of competing professionally once again.

Williams' clarification elicited a range of reactions from fans, as well as the tennis world at large on X (formerly Twitter). Her former peer, Magda Linette, was looking forward to a hitting session. Journalist Ben Rothenberg wanted to dig deep into the matter, asking Williams why she applied to re-enter the ITIA testing pool.
