With several European clubs lurking to offer Rodman a lucrative contract, the Spirit offered her a multiyear, multimillion-dollar offer, but the NWSL rejected the deal, citing hard salary cap rules followed across the league. In response, the NWSL Players Association filed a grievance, stating the league had no business in interfering with Rodman's free agency and the potential contract that complies with the current CBA.With the possibility of Rodman possibly leaving NWSL, the league's Board of Governors recently approved a new "High Impact Player" roster mechanism, which will allow teams to pay certain star players more, up to about $1 million over the cap. However, this new rule still needs to be formally approved by the NWSL Players Association.Spirit president of soccer operations Haley Carter shared her thoughts on the decision made by the league. She highlighted the move had more significance than just Rodman.“Trinity is sort of the impetus for this, but this isn’t just about one player. We’ve already lost multiple players this year in two transfer windows overseas for massive transfer fees,” Carter said Tuesday. “So it’s really about retaining those athletes, building a roster that can compete sustainably, keeping our best players, attracting even more elite talent, and also creating an environment where world-class athletes want to be.”It remains to be seen if the NWSL's latest move will help Rodman's free agency.
