Martina Navratilova slams 'idiotic' news headline after Zohran Mamdani’s NYC mayoral win, calls for end to Andrew Cuomo’s political career

Martina Navratilova reacted to Zohran Mamdani's mayoral win in New York City by slamming a news headline and calling for an end to Andre Cuomo's political career. The American tennis icon also defended Mamdani after he was called a 'socialist.'

The 2025 mayoral election in New York City concluded on November 4. Mamdani, the Democratic nominee, won with just over 50% of the vote. He defeated independent former governor Cuomo, who gained around 40% of the vote, and Republican Curtis Sliwa, who received roughly 7%.

An X account shared the New York Post's cover for Wednesday, after Mamdani won the election. The media house used the headline “The Red Apple” to mock his socialist identity. The imagery and wording (“On your Marx, get set, Zo!”) link his win to communism in a satirical, sensational way.

Reacting to it, Navratilova wrote:

"What an idiotic headline."

Another X account claimed it would be a 'fitting end' to Cuomo's political career after losing the election with President Donald Trump's endorsement. They added:

"I hope him and his brother move to a desert island after he loses."

Reacting to this, the 18-time Grand Slam champion wrote:

"Amen"

This election marks the city’s first Muslim and first South Asian mayor, and one of its youngest. The incoming mayor will be sworn in on January 1, 2026.

Martina Navratilova defends Zohran Mamdani as Kayleigh McEnany slams Democrats after mayoral triumph

Kayleigh McEnany is an American political commentator and former White House Press Secretary under President Donald Trump from 2020 to 2021. A longtime Republican, she previously served as a spokesperson for the Republican National Committee.

She is known for her staunch defense of Trump. After leaving the White House, McEnany joined Fox News. She shared her opinion on X after Zohran Mamdani won the mayoral elections in New York City. McEnany wrote:

"A Socialist has officially taken over New York City. What a day in America. You own this Democrats."

Martina Navratilova, who regularly shares her criticism of Trump on social media, responded to it by writing:

"lol. Pretty sure you have no clue what that means. Socialism is actually when the government controls everything and takes in the money from companies, among other things. That’s what your guy is doing. Try again!!!"

Mamdani is a Democratic Socialist politician from New York. He advocates for policies such as affordable housing, free public transit, and higher taxes on the wealthy.
