Holger Rune was recently spotted hitting forehands and backhands on a practice court; an encouraging sign as far as the Dane's recovery from his horror injury at this year's Stockholm Open is concerned. Even though Rune underwent surgery in the aftermath of sustaining the injury, it's quite likely that he will spend several months on the sidelines before he can finally return to competitive action.

In October this year, Rune's semifinal outing in Stockholm ended in tears, as he ruptured his left Achilles tendon while leading Ugo Humbert. The 22-year-old subsequently retired from the match and swiftly chose to undergo surgery, which was successful.

On Thursday, November 20, Holger Rune took to his Instagram Stories and shared a few videos of himself hitting on one of the courts at the Monte Carlo Country Club. One of them featured the Dane practicing his forehand and backhand on his right leg alone, with his left foot all strapped up in protective gear.

In all likelihood, the earliest Rune could return to competitive tennis action is in the second half of the 2026 season. Recently, the Dane opined that his Stockholm injury horror stemmed from physical fatigue.

In a recent interview with Hard Court, Holger Rune was of the opinion that physical fatigue was to blame for the ruptured Achilles tendon he suffered at the 2025 Stockholm Open. Rune and several other tennis players spanning both the men's and women's sides of the sport have been critical in recent years of the lengthy tennis calendar. The Dane also urged other sports to take note of his injury, saying:

"The main reason I suffered this injury is fatigue, I’m certain of that. This is a factor that should scare the entire sports industry. Sport is entertainment, we all love entertainment, we love the people who enjoy watching us play."

He added:

We must ensure that everyone has the opportunity to listen to their bodies, but it’s really difficult when you love tennis so much, the competition, the game, the tournaments, and every single fan who comes to the stadium."

Rune finished the 2025 tennis season as the World No. 15 in men's singles. Despite mostly inconsistent results, the Dane did win the Barcelona Open title during the European clay swing.
