The ATP Finals concluded on Sunday, November 16, with Jannik Sinner defeating Carlos Alcaraz and defending his title successfully. However, the Spaniard secured the year-end World No. 1 trophy, despite the runner-up finish.

The year-end championships in Turin featured the best men’s players of 2025, all competing for the prestigious season-ending title. Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner were joined by Felix Auger-Aliassime, Taylor Fritz, Ben Shelton, Alexander Zverev, Alex de Minaur, and Lorenzo Musetti in the elite eight-man field.

Alcaraz overcame Canada’s Auger-Aliassime in the semifinals, while Sinner defeated Australia’s de Minaur to set up their sixth meeting of the year. The Italian, who had lost the previous two encounters, finally broke the streak by winning the final and closing out his season on a strong note.

However, the tournament wasn’t free from controversy. From Novak Djokovic’s last-minute withdrawal causing chaos to players being booed by the Turin crowd, the ATP Finals saw several flashpoints. Here is every controversy that unfolded during the event.

Before the tournament even began, Alcaraz was met with hostility in Turin. As he returned to his hotel, a group of Italian fans shouted insults at him. According to the caption of the video shared on X:

Many fans online disapproved of the reactions from the Turin fans.

"Shameful behavior from those hooligans. And yet another reason why the ATP Finals should not be hosted by Italy," one fan wrote.
"Who was booing my boy ?!?!?! How dare they 🤬🤬🤬" another fan wrote.

Moreover, the tension escalated inside the arena. When the jumbotron displayed Alcaraz’s entrance amid Musetti’s introduction while Fritz and de Minaur played their group stage match, the crowd erupted in boos. Many believe the reaction stemmed from his rivalry with home favourite Sinner.

Taylor Fritz was forced into a grueling back-to-back schedule at the 2025 ATP Finals after Novak Djokovic pulled out at the eleventh hour. Djokovic’s withdrawal came only after his lengthy Athens final, dramatically shaking up the draw and forcing late replacement Lorenzo Musetti into the field.

Originally, Fritz was due to open his Turin campaign against Djokovic, but with the Serb’s sudden exit, he instead faced Musetti, then had to play again the very next day against Carlos Alcaraz. Many fans voiced frustration, calling it unfair that Fritz bore the brunt of the schedule disruption.

"It’s Djokovic’s fault, his dumbass should have withdrawn from the tournament months ago," one fan wrote

"So Fritz also has to play back-to-back days because Musetti got in late? The entire group should have just started yesterday. Not Fritz' issue that it came down to the last day," another fan wrote.

World No. 6 Fritz defeated Musetti but lost both his next matches to Alcaraz and de Minaur, bowing out of the event.

Carlos Alcaraz gets asked an "inappropriate" personal question

After his win over Alex de Minaur at the ATP Finals, Carlos Alcaraz was unexpectedly asked about his dating life during the post-match press conference. Former doubles star turned reporter Elena Vesnina asked:

"Your heart has been taken? Are you free?"

Alcaraz, taken aback, chuckled and replied:

"No, I’m free. I’m free. I’m free."

While he handled it gracefully, many fans weren’t impressed. They argued that such personal questions have no place at a tennis press conference. Reporters, they said, should stick to tennis when covering a sporting event and not delve into players’ romantic lives.

"Unnecessary and inappropriate. Carlos’s personal life is his own business. Stick to the tennis," one fan wrote.

At the ATP Finals, Felix Auger-Aliassime made headlines for his blunt response to fellow players complaining about the grueling tour schedule. He said:

"If you want to play less tournaments, stay home. Nobody's forcing you to be here."

He added that many players have "lost perspective completely." Auger-Aliassime emphasized how grateful he feels just to be on tour, calling himself "lucky and blessed" despite the travel and fatigue.

But not everyone agreed with him. Many fans criticized his comments as dismissive. They felt he was undermining legitimate concerns about player burnout and overwork. Some argued that tennis insiders and journalists should pay more attention to player welfare instead of just brushing it off.

Simone Bolelli and Andrea Vavassori lose a controversial point in their ATP Finals semifinal

In their semifinal match at the ATP Finals, Harri Heliovaara and Henry Patten defeated Italians Simone Bolelli and Andrea Vavassori. However, it was not without drama.

A key point saw the chair umpire call a “touch” against Bolelli, who then challenged the decision. A video review followed, and despite Vavassori insisting that the ball didn’t alter its path, the umpire ruled that one frame did show the ball grazing Bolelli’s shirt.

Many fans on social media were unhappy with the call. Some argued the contact was so slight it didn’t change the point’s outcome

"Can we talk about the shirt touch incident though, why would the umpire even get involved in a call that is so close and doesn't even affect the trajectory of the ball at all? The shirt touch is barely even noticable in slo mo, probably couldn't even see it from his angle in real time," one fan wrote on Reddit.

Heliovaara and Patten eventually defeated the duo of Joe Salisbury and Neal Skupski to win the doubles ATP Finals title.
