Daniil Medvedev's former coach, Gilles Cervara, has found a new gig as the coach of rising American star Nishesh Basavareddy. After eight long years, his partnership with the Russian came to an end after his first-round exit from the US Open 2025.
French daily L'Equipe for the first to break the news of Cervava's new assignment. He will accompany Basavareddy to the upcoming Next Gen ATP Finals, which will be held from December 17-21, and continue their collaboration into 2026. The 20-year-old failed to progress beyond the group stage of the tournament a year ago, and will aim to change that this time.
Basavareddy made his ATP debut at the Brisbane International 2025, and progressed to his first tour-level semifinal a week later at the ASB Classic. He also pushed Novak Djokovic to four sets in the first round of the Australian Open. He peaked at No. 99 in the rankings in the middle of the year.
Despite Basavareddy's steady progress in 2025, he also regressed in some areas. He won two titles from four finals on the Challenger circuit last year, and didn't even reach a single final this year. With Cervara in his corner from now on, he will be keen to take his career to the next level. He helped Medvedev attain great heights during their partnership, and he will be eager to similarly shape the young American's career as well.
Gilles Cervara coached Medvedev to 20 career titles, including the US Open 2021

Gilles Cervara started working as a coach in 2007. He was also a hitting partner to some of the most famous names in the sport, including Justine Henin, Marat Safin, and Thomas Enqvist. He started working with Daniil Medvedev in 2017, and a year later, helped him crack the top 20 along with his first three career titles.
Their partnership blossomed in 2019. Medvedev entered the top 10 that year, and won two Masters 1000 titles and finished as the runner-up at the US Open. Amidst the chaos of the pandemic, Cervara led the Russian to his first ATP Finals title, and followed it up with his maiden Major triumph at the US Open 2021.
A few months later, Medvedev ascended to the top of the rankings. Cervara guided his charge to 20 career titles in all. For his impressive work with Medvedev, he received the ATP Award for Coach of the Year in 2019. He was nominated for the same honor in 2020 and 2021 as well, though he didn't win in those years.
Known for his calm demeanor and analytical approach to tennis, Cervara could help Nishesh Basavareddy realize his full potential. Their partnership will be put to the test in a few days at the Next Gen ATP Finals 2025, which will be their first tournament together.
