Carlos Alcaraz revealed the last time tennis brought him to tears, saying it wasn’t particularly recent but not too far back either. He also spoke about working with a sports psychologist and how the experience has been helping him manage the mental side of the sport.

Alcaraz enjoyed a spectacular 2025 season, capturing two of the four Grand Slams at the French Open and the US Open. He added six more titles in Rotterdam, Monte-Carlo, Rome, Queen’s Club, Cincinnati and Tokyo, finishing the year as World No. 1 with an impressive 71-9 win/loss record.

The Spaniard would have had a perfect finish to the year had he won the ATP Finals, but he fell short in the title match against Jannik Sinner. After the tournament, he took some time to speak with the Spanish media. When asked about the last time he cried because of tennis, he revealed it happened at the Miami Open earlier this year.

"When was the last time you cried because of tennis?" the journalist asked.
"It was in Miami, yes, in Miami," Carlos Alcaraz replied.

Notably, Alcaraz had a rough campaign in Miami, where he lost to David Goffin in his opening match.

He also spoke about working with his sports psychologist, Isabel Balaguer, saying he has not needed to visit her as often lately because he has gradually been feeling better ever since the Miami setback.

"I’m talking less and less with her. It’s a relationship where Juanqui and Samu talk to her a lot to give her instructions so that she can then pass them on to me on court. I talk to her when I feel the need to vent and speak with someone," Alcaraz said.

"Thank God, since Miami I haven’t had that feeling of needing to vent because everything has gone really well. Both on and off the court, I’ve felt very good," he added.

Balaguer is a professor and the director of the Sports Psychology Research Unit at the University of Valencia, and she has worked with Carlos Alcaraz since 2019. He reaches out to her when he feels he needs support, usually during pre-season or in the lead-up to Major finals.

Carlos Alcaraz withdrew from the 2025 Davis Cup Finals after scans revealed swelling and muscle overload in his right hamstring, the same issue that troubled him during his ATP Finals showdown with Jannik Sinner. He traveled to Bologna in hopes of joining the Spanish team, but an MRI confirmed the injury hadn’t settled enough for him to compete.

Alcaraz said he was “heartbroken” to miss out, noting that the Davis Cup is one of the events he values most. He had been expected to lead Spain in their quarterfinal against Czechia.

"I have an edema in the hamstring of my right leg, and the medical recommendation is not to compete. I've always said that playing for Spain is the greatest thing there is, and I was so excited to be able to help fight for the Salad Bowl. I'm heading home feeling heartbroken," he said.

The Spaniard has now returned home for rest and treatment, which he’ll undergo daily until the swelling subsides. The positive update is that the injury isn’t considered long-term.
