The 2025 season has been dominated by Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner, and that dominance has raised concerns. Journalist Benoit Maylin suggested that while the year was not dull, it failed to deliver continuous excitement beyond the battles between the top two.
Maylin, in his piece for Winamax's "Sans Filet" program, warned that the sport could be heading toward a predictable future if the same pattern continues into 2026. About 2025, he wrote:
"We won’t say we were bored, but it wasn’t exactly thrilling."
He blamed the lack of thrill on Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner's dominance as they "demolished the competition". Maylin went on to detail the highlights of their season.
The pair delivered one of the matches of the decade in their French Open final. Alcaraz saved championship points and stormed back in a marathon five-set win. It was the kind of contest that reminded fans why tennis is one of the most thrilling sports in the world.
Beyond their rivalry, though, the season lacked many shock moments or breakthrough stories. There were emotional goodbyes, including Rafael Nadal’s farewell, and a few surprise runs, including Lois Boisson's Roland Garros semifinal and Valentin Vacherot's fairytale Masters 1000 title.
But there was no true explosion from a new star to disrupt the order. Maylin hopes for "a bit of madness" next year. Something unexpected.
"Why not Joao Fonseca as an alien? The circuit gone wild! Basically, anything you want to put the top two in their place," he wrote.
Maylin hopes for anything that changes the script. Because tennis, as he sees it, should never become routine.
