Boris Becker is of the opinion that Ben Shelton should try to get the services of American tennis legends Andre Agassi and Pete Sampras for one important reason. The American had one of the best years of his career in 2025, finishing as the World No. 9 after reaching a career-high ranking of World No. 5.
Becker was all praise for Shelton, his aggressive style of play and his charismatic personality on the court, saying so in the latest episode of the 'Becker Petkovic' podcast. Shelton is currently coached by his father Bryan, who was also a former top 50 player in the world.
While Becker admitted that his father has been doing a commendable job coaching Ben Shelton, he felt the 23-year-old could do even better tactically. To help that part of his game, Boris Becker believes a super coach like Agassi or Sampras would immensely benefit the American.
"So for me, one of the favourite players of the year. I like his personality, I like his charisma, I like the way he plays tennis. But I think he could play tactically much better. And the boy is number five in the world. His coach is his father, who was also a world-class player and has a lot of knowledge about the sport," Becker said.
“But I think, if I may ask the question, that Ben Shelton should think about a super coach. I think of [Andre] Agassi, I think of [Pete] Sampras..." he added.
While Pete Sampras has largely remained out of the public eye since his retirement from tennis, that has not been the case with Andre Agassi. The eight-time Grand Slam champion recently mentored Holger Rune for a brief time, and also served as the captain for Team World at the Laver Cup, where Shelton was part of the winning squad.
Boris Becker on why he is a big fan of Ben Shelton
Boris Becker, in the podcast, also spoke about why exactly he is a big fan of Ben Shelton. The German icon felt that tennis needed charismatic personalities to attract fans around the world -- a quality he felt Shelton embodied more than most players at the moment.
“We need charismatic, good personalities, where the boys and girls in the world go to watch, cheer them on. Turn on the channel to watch them. That’s why I’m a big fan of Ben Shelton,” Becker said.
Shelton won one title in 2025, at the Canadian Open. It was also his maiden Masters 1000 title. Till date, the American has three titles to his name.
