Rafael Nadal has spoken about the need for a third wheel that could push Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz to new limits. According to the 22-time Grand Slam champion, everything appears to come too easily for both of them, and even on their bad day, they can beat anyone.

Nadal also gave his thoughts on which player could challenge them, before highlighting the difference in competition between Carlos Alcaraz, Jannik Sinner and the rest of the field.

"I think Sinner and Alcaraz need someone to push them... Fonseca? I think he's still young and not in a position to think about that," Nadal said via Cadena SER. "They need someone to push them a bit because they've set themselves apart from everyone else and in any form they can beat anyone, until they come up against that other player. Those of us watching from the outside have the feeling that even if they play badly, they're going to keep winning and reaching all the finals."

Some fans believe the Spaniard's take was "hypocritical" given that he himself used to dominate tennis along with Roger Federer before Novak Djokovic came along.

"I'm sorry but i don't understand why the big 3 keep pushing this narrative that we need someone to upset Sinner and Alcaraz when they literally dominated everything for a decade and the new generation JUST started. so hypocritical," one fan wrote.

"Big 3 already concerned about their records," one fan added.
"What he means is if there’s no third wheel. His records are gone for sure 🤣. Carlos and Sinner easily overtake his 22," one fan wrote.
"He wasn't too thrilled when that serbian guy appeared to push them," another commented.
"Not Nadal admitting Djokovic's surprise rise to GOATness in 2011 made him & Federer so much better players 😆! I agree with him though. But imo it seems none of them want it bad enough like Djokovic did. They're just not hungry to beat Sincaraz imo. They're happy being mediocre," one fan said.

"Rafa is bored, wishes another Djokovic will appear and save the sport. Tennis clearly needs another Djokovic figure," one fan wrote.

How Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz have dominated tennis in the last two years

After Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal retired, tennis saw a transition at the top with Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner taking their place. Novak Djokovic is still active but he hasn't found a way to get past them for his elusive 25th Grand Slam title.

Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner have shared all the Grand Slams played in the last two years. Alcaraz, 22, is already a six-time Grand Slam champion, while the 24-year old Italian has four Majors to his name. Sinner has won both the 2024 and 2025 ATP Finals. Moreover, Sinner in 2024 and 2025 became the first man since Novak Djokovic to finish back-to-back seasons with over 11,000 ranking points.

2025 also marked the first time since 2016 that the top two ATP stars finished above 11,000 points.
