Margaret Court is often regarded as the greatest tennis player of all time and her record speaks for itself. The former Australian World No. 1 has won 64 Grand Slams in total after combining her singles, women’s doubles, and mixed doubles.
Moreover, she has won 24 Grand Slams, one more than Serena Williams, two more than Steffi Graf and when compared to men's tennis, equivalent to Novak Djokovic. The 38-year-old Serb is chasing the elusive 25th Grand Slam title that would surpass Court's longstanding record.
In an interview with The Telegraph, Court revealed that she won't be surprised if anyone eclipses her record of most Grand Slam singles titles (24, tied), but she doesn't think that her 64 combined Grand Slam titles will ever be accomplished.
“The 24, I won’t be surprised if it’s beaten,” she said. “But the 64, I don’t think it ever will be... Whatever tennis does, it can never take away what I’ve done.”
Court has also won 21 mixed doubles Grand Slam titles, which is also a record across men's and women's tennis. She is also the only player to complete the "Career Boxed Set" twice and has won most singles titles of any player ever (192, both before and after the start of the Open Era).
Tennis historian opens up on Novak Djokovic's chase of breaking Margaret Court's record
Tennis historian Steve Flink has given a blunt take on Novak Djokovic's chase to break Margaret Court's record by winning the 25th Grand Slam. Over the last two years, the Serb has reached three semifinals in 2024, yet his chase for his first Grand Slam title continues. The likes of Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner have become thorns in the side of the ageing Serb during the same period.
However, Flink doesn't agree that Djokovic needs to break Court's record to enter the conversation for the greatest player of all time across men's and women's tennis.
“What I don’t understand is his pursuit of a 25th Grand Slam. It makes sense in terms of surpassing Margaret Court," Flink said via Tennis 365. “But it’s a false argument, a false target. Mainly from the media, because they constantly place his photo next to Margaret’s. He’s not in competition with Margaret Court because she isn’t even in the conversation for the greatest female player of all time.
"She’s far from it. Every expert would rank [Martina] Navratilova, [Steffi] Graf, Serena Williams, and [Chris] Evert above Margaret.”
It remains to be seen if Djokovic will finally win his historic 25th Grand Slam.
