Iga Natalia Świątek, in many ways, is the face of the WTA. A Polish professional tennis player who was born on May 31, 2001, she is ranked No. 2 in the world as of late 2024. Having grown up idolizing Spanish GOAT Rafael Nadal, it is no surprise that Swiatek has paved an illustrious path to her own glory. Following the shocking retirement of Australia's Ashleigh Barty in 2022, many people questioned the future of the WTA; consequently, the Polish mainstay has shouldered responsibility and carried the division forward with aplomb.

Świątek has won the US Open in 2022 and the French Open four times, in 2020, 2022, 2023 and 2024, making her a five-time major singles champion. She is the first Polish player, male or female, to win a major singles championship. In total, she has won 22 singles titles over her entire tennis career, including the 2024 Indian Wells, where she defeated Maria Sakkari in straight sets, and the 2024 Madrid Open, as well as Rome Open, where she defeated Aryna Sabalenka in the final.

Swiatek registered her 100th WTA 1000 career win after defeating Camila Giorgi in one hour at the 2024 Miami Open. She finished semifinalist at the 2024 Dubai Tennis Championship and the 2024 Stuttgart Open. Swiatek entered her 100th week as the world's No. 1, surpassing Lindsay Davenport and thus acquiring ninth place in the all-time table.

With a drop shot from the baseline, Świątek won the WTA Fan Favorite Shot of the Year in 2019 and was chosen as the WTA Fan Favorite Singles Player of the Year in 2020. She is the 2023 Polish Sports Personality of the Year as well as the L'Equipe Champion of Champions winner. She was also listed among the top 100 influential people in the world in 2023 by Time magazine.

What is Iga Świątek’s Playing Style?

Świątek plays with a lot of variety in her game and an aggressive, all-court style. She frequently makes both a lot of winners and unforced errors because her game is primarily offensive in nature. When playing on clay, she has been characterized as having "a big forehand, topspin, and backhand down the line."

Even though she plays aggressively, Swiatek knows how to utilize the entire court and wait for the right moment to pounce. The World No.1 carefully builds points until she has the perfect opportunity to hit a winner. In all seven matches that she played at the 2020 French Open, she hit more winners than unforced errors (127 unforced errors in comparison to 175 winners).

Świątek's backhand is just as quick and powerful as her forehand, which is hit with significant topspin due to her extreme western grip. Her average forehand speed during her run to the French Open title in 2020 was 73 mph (117 km/h), just 4 km/h slower than the average male forehand speed. She even had forehands that reached a top speed of 79 mph (127 km/h), which was faster than any other female player in the draw, and only surpassed by Jannik Sinner on the men's side.
