Defending champion Coco Gauff will take on eighth seed Jasmine Paolini in the group stage of the WTA Finals 2025.

Gauff was up against Jessica Pegula in her first match of the group stage. The match started with five consecutive breaks of serve, with Pegula gaining the upper hand for a 3-2 lead. She remained in front for the remainder of the set and broke her younger rival's serve once again to take the set.
Gauff landed the first blow in the second set to go up a break. She maintained a tight grip on her lead and gave herself the opportunity to serve for the set. However, Pegula broke back at that point to level the score. Gauff snagged another break of serve to go 6-5 up, and even brought up a set point. She then threw in three double faults to drop her serve.
Nevertheless, Gauff got back on track in the tie-break, edging past Pegula to claim the set. The pair traded service breaks to start the third set, though the 31-year-old soon ran away with the match after that. Pegula swept the last five games of the match for a 6-3, 6-7 (4), 6-2 win.
Paolini was up against World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka in her first group tie. The Italian initially overcame a break deficit in the opening set but couldn't do the same the second time, costing her the set. She got outclassed by the top seed in the second set, securing only one game for herself to lose the match 6-3, 6-1.

Gauff arrived at the WTA Finals on the heels of a title-winning run at the Wuhan Open. However, her title defense at the year-end championships has started on a dismal note. She hit 17 double faults against Pegula and committed 45 unforced errors just from her forehand wing.
In comparison, Gauff hit a total of 27 double faults the entire week in Wuhan. She did hit some massive bombs when she found her mark with her serve, though she negated any gains made by a good serve with her double faults.
Despite the flaws in her game, Gauff still made it a competitive match, something which Paolini couldn't do against Sabalenka. The Italian looked a step slower, and playing a full season of singles and doubles seems to be catching up to her. She's competing in both disciplines at the WTA Finals as well, meaning no day off for her during the group stage.
