US President Donald Trump recently shared his thoughts on fighting against drug cartels and narcotics production in Mexico and Colombia. According to NBC News, the 79-year-old politician revealed to reporters at White House on Monday about expanding U.S. strikes in the region after the government carried out a series of strikes on small boats in the Caribbean and Pacific.

While speaking to reporters in the Oval Office, the United States President answered a question about potentially taking aggressive action against drug cartels and narcotics in Mexico. When asked about sending American troops into the country, the politician asserted:

“Would I launch strikes in Mexico to stop drugs? It’s okay with me. I’ve been speaking to Mexico. They know how I stand. We’re losing hundreds of thousands of people to drugs. So now we’ve stopped the waterways, but we know every route.”

While the US President has reportedly intensified his campaign against maritime drug trafficking and authorized more forceful interdiction operations, his recent remarks suggest the US already has a shortlist of targets in Mexico. Speaking about his administration’s fight against drug cartels, he added:

“We know every route, we know the addresses of every drug lord. We know their address, we know their front door. We know everything about every one of them. They’re killing our people. That’s like a war. Would I do it? I’d be proud to.”

After the 47th President of the United States had seemingly given U.S. forces some expanded authority to disable or sink vessels suspected of carrying narcotics, he also raised the prospect of targeting cocaine laboratories in Colombia on Monday. Although Donald Trump didn’t announce any direct U.S. military intervention, he added:

“Would I knock out those factories? I would be proud to do it personally. I didn’t say I’m doing it, but I would be proud to do it because we’re going to save millions of lives.”

US airstrikes against alleged drug boats in the Caribbean and eastern Pacific have reportedly not weakened since early September. According to the BBC, the US military and surveillance campaign was officially named Operation Southern Spear on November 13.

As per the BBC, President Trump and members of his administration have reportedly justified the strikes as a necessary measure to stem the flow of narcotics from Latin America to US streets. In a statement, Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth said that the campaign is aimed at removing “narco-terrorists from our hemisphere” and securing America from “the drugs that are killing our people.”

While the Trump administration launched nearly two dozen strikes on boats allegedly carrying narcotics in the region and near Venezuela, the operation has killed more than 80 people, including Colombian citizens. Notably, the strikes also led leftist Colombian President Gustavo Petro to denounce the actions of the Trump administration.

Meanwhile, according to NBC News, the government began planning for its new campaign of sending American troops and intelligence officers to Mexico to target drug cartels this month.

For the unversed, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum last Tuesday said that unilateral US military action inside Mexico “won’t happen.” Her remarks come after the US ramped up its military efforts, including fatal strikes, in Latin America in recent months.
