Dakota Johnson recently opened up about her biggest "red flag" in men. The Materialists star shared her candid thoughts during a new episode of Vogue Germany’s Questions from Everywhere digital series, released on October 21, 2025.
When asked about her biggest “red flag” in men, the 36-year-old actress explained that for her, it often came down to a man’s choice of footwear.
“Men who wear flip flops… Run,” Dakota Johnson told Vogue.
In the same interview, the Madame Web alum also discussed another personal quirk. She explained that she had extreme sensitivity to scents, admitting that she didn’t enjoy perfumes or colognes. She noted that her heightened sense of smell made strong fragrances overwhelming for her.
“No, I don’t love it. I have a really specific olfactory situation happening for me with men and women and everyone,” Johnson explained.
Johnson has always been candid about sharing her dos and don’ts in relationships.
The actress, whose eight-year relationship with singer Chris Martin ended in July, had previously shared what she absolutely did not look for in a partner. She explained that her partner must not be an "a**hole,” during a July 9 interview on Today
Before the reports of her split surfaced, Dakota Johnson had also offered a rare insight into her dating life. During a May 15 interview with Elle, the actress said:
“I’ve never dated anybody. I’ve had boyfriends, but I have never been on a dating app... I just don’t know that world. So, it was so interesting and intriguing... Loving someone is the most scary and beautiful thing you can do.”
Dakota Johnson reveals her unusual hair-trimming habits and candid thoughts on style

In an interview with Vogue Germany published on October 21, 2025, Dakota Johnson opened up about her beauty routine, specifically her unconventional haircare habits.
The Materialists star began by discussing her famous bangs, a signature look that she had maintained for most of her life. Johnson shared that her attachment to her bangs dated back to childhood, and at that point, it had become part of her identity.
“I’ve had bangs since I was a kid… I cut them myself when I was about four, and I absolutely loved them. I’ve had them my whole life, except for when I was about 10 to 14. I just feel like myself with bangs,” Johnson explained.
While she admitted the upkeep could be demanding, Johnson said she had fully embraced the unorthodox ritual.
“Would I be happy not to have to trim them all the time? 100 percent... But I also always travel with scissors, and I love to drink a martini while trimming my own bangs,” Dakota Johnson laughed.
She added that the mix of scissors and martinis didn’t always go as planned, though it didn’t end badly, "not every time."
Johnson revealed that her haircare routine was refreshingly minimal. She shared that she didn’t rely on styling products, other than a serum from Crown Affair, and usually let her "hair air dry."
During the interview, she mentioned her hair was “still a little damp” because she hadn’t done anything to it. She clarified that while "filming", her on-set stylists took care of her look.
For red-carpet appearances, Johnson detailed that she relied on celebrity hairstylists Mark Townsend and George Northwood.
"They take really good care of my hair...It's super long, but my hair and nails grow fast. I think it just has to do with what you do internally. I eat very healthy, drink lots of water, and don't do too much to my hair," she added.
During the interview, Johnson spoke candidly about her bold red-carpet choices. When asked if she ever worried that a daring outfit might be “too sexy,” the Verity star didn’t hesitate and said that she "really" did not care.
Johnson explained that she felt confident wearing dresses that made her feel beautiful, saying she had “been able to wear some of the most beautiful dresses.”
She further acknowledged that not every look worked. Some dresses “didn’t look good at all” depending on their shape, finish, or colour. But she emphasized that when she found "a beautiful dress," which felt comfortable in, she loved to wear it. She further added that it was "fun to wear a sexy dress."
Dakota Johnson is set to take on the lead role in the upcoming film adaptation of Colleen Hoover’s bestselling novel Verity, which is slated for release on October 2, 2026.
