AFans have reacted to Tom Cruise's outer space movie reportedly getting scrapped. The actor reportedly didn't want to get the required permission from U.S. President Donald Trump.
As per a 2020 report by Deadline, Tom Cruise was preparing to make a movie, parts of which would be filmed in outer space. Doug Liman, who directed Edge of Tomorrow, joined him on the project. They would have collaborated with NASA and Elon Musk's SpaceX for the movie.
However, as per a Page Six report, published on December 10, an insider has said the movie has been scrapped. It would have required permissions from the federal government, and as per the insider, Cruise was unwilling to do so. The insider told the outlet:
“From what I understand, they would need NASA coordination to do the movie, and supposedly Tom Cruise did not want to ask Donald Trump for a favor. You’d need permission from the federal government. Tom didn’t want to ask for political reasons.”

NASA Administrator had confirmed collaboration with Tom Cruise in 2020

Notably, the NASA Administrator had confirmed that they are in talks with Cruise and Doug Liman for a potential movie filmed in outer space. The organization's X handle wrote in a now-deleted tweet:
"NASA is excited to work with @TomCruise on a film aboard the @Space_Station! We need popular media to inspire a new generation of engineers and scientists to make @NASA's ambitious plans a reality."
Cruise is known for his high-adventure movies, including the Mission Impossible and the Top Gun franchises. He performs death-defying stunts himself and continues to do so at 63.
When Doug Liam opened up about his outer space movie with Tom Cruise
In September this year, Doug Liam shared an update on his potential outer space movie with Tom Cruise. He asserted that their goal is to make "something great" and not just use an outer space adventure as a gimmick.
In an interview with Deadline, published on September 1, Liam said:
“I’m more excited about going to space, not less … but our goal is to make something great. A lot of people are trying to do gimmicky things like, ‘Oh, it’s in space.’ I’m not interested in doing something that’s a just promotional gimmick. I want to make a film that people watch in a hundred years when maybe there’s hundreds of movies shot in outer space…”
Liam asserted that he wanted to make something in outer space that "you couldn’t do on Earth". However, it appears to have been scrapped for now.
