Jenna Ortega opened up about the impact of artificial intelligence in cinema during a recent appearance at the Marrakech Film Festival in Morocco.
The Wednesday star was part of the jury at the event, chaired by Parasite director Bong Joon Ho. Other jury members included Celine Song, Anya Taylor-Joy, Karim Aïnouz, Julia Ducournau, Payman Maadi, and Hakim Belabbes.
During the event, members were asked about the rise of AI and its influence on cinema. For Ortega, the development was like opening Pandora's box.
“In these difficult and confusing times, oftentimes it pushes the artist to speak out more, to do more, for there to be this new awakening and passion and protection and I want to assume and hope that that’s the case,” she continued.
She also highlighted the cautions in AI despite its rapid growth.
“But there’s certain things that AI just isn’t able to replicate. There’s beauty in difficulty and there’s beauty in mistakes, and a computer can’t do that. A computer has no soul," said the Wednsday star.
The 23-year-old actress concluded with the hope that AI someday becomes synonymous with "mental junk food and we feel sick, and we don’t know why."
"I think, as terrible as it is to say, sometimes audiences need to be deprived of something in order to appreciate something again,” she said.
Chairperson Bong Joon Ho echoed Ortega's words. He described it as the first time humans have ever considered what only their race is capable of accomplishing.
“My personal answer is I’m going to organize a military squad where their mission is to destroy AI all over the world," he quipped.
The Marrakech Film Festival started on November 28 and is scheduled to run through December 6.
"She doesn't try to kill him enough!": Jenna Ortega speaks candidly about what she wants in Wednesday season 3

Jenna Ortega shared her hopes for Wednesday's storyline in season 3 of the hit Netflix series. Earlier this year, season 3 was officially approved by the creators, with Wednesday and her mother returning to their roles. Jenna Ortega emphasized that she wants to see more of the camaraderie between these two characters in the upcoming season.
"I would like them to stop arguing and team up. We'd just been talking about women banding together, and you see that a bit in the final episode, or episodes. I think we should lean into that. It's really exciting and refreshing to see women displayed that way," she explained.
Ortega also wanted the creators to delve deeper into Wednesday's darker side. However, overdoing it might do more harm than good, according to the actress.
"And I would like to see more death attempts between her and Pugsley. She doesn't try to kill him enough! I want to see stuff like that," she concluded.
A release date for Wednesday season 3 has not been announced yet. The first two seasons are available to watch on Netflix.
