"Gone but never forgotten": Fans celebrate the 49th birthday of late Marvel star Chadwick Boseman

Fans online flooded social media to pay their respects to the late Chadwick Boseman on his 49th birthday. On August 28, 2020, the Marvel star passed away after a four-year battle with colon cancer. He was 43 at the time.

Boseman started his career as an actor and playwright and received numerous awards throughout his illustrious career. These include a Primetime Emmy award, a BAFTA award, a Golden Globe, and a Screen Actors Guild Award, among others.

On his birth anniversary, several fans took to X to pay tribute to the late veteran. Some popular ones are as follows.

"Today, we celebrate the remarkable Chadwick Boseman, who would’ve turned 49. Gone but never forgotten," an X user wrote.

Several users also remembered Boseman's iconic role as Black Panther (T'Challa) in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Chadwick Boseman was also listed in the 2018 Time 100 for being the first actor of color to star in an MCU film.

On November 20, 2025, Chadwick Boseman's name was immortalized after he received his own star on the iconic Hollywood Walk of Fame.

Chadwick Boseman's widowed wife, Simone Ledward-Boseman, honored his legacy by bringing his shoes to the unveiling ceremony for his star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Chadwick's late wife and brothers, Derrick Boseman and Kevin Boseman, posed with his shoe and photo in front of the newly unveiled memorabilia.

“Chad was more than an actor or even an artist," said Simone Ledward-Boseman. "He was a spiritual teacher fortified by family; close friends that kept him grounded in faith; a team that believed in him, protected him and fought for him; colleagues that trusted his vision, that lifted him up and forged a real brotherhood. You have no idea how pivotal those moments were.

“Chad taught all of us a great deal. His heart was so vast he could give each and every person a specific part of him and still have so much left to share with the world.”

Thereafter, she referred to Chadwick Boseman in the first person and said:

“We recognize your skill and your devotion, and we submit your legacy as a hero and an icon. You lived with honor and you walked in truth. You are as brilliant as you were beautiful and as courageous as you were kind.”

Boseman's MCU colleagues Ryan Coogler, Michael B. Jordan, and Letitia Wright, along with Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom star Viola Davis, also attended the event.

Chadwick Boseman's final performance was in the Netflix film Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom. Directed by George C. Wolfe, the film was based on the eponymous 1982 play by August Wilson. Inspired by the "Mother of the Blues," Ma Rainey, the story depicts a chaotic recording session in the 1920s.

Boseman received a Golden Globe for his role as Levee Green. His wife accepted the award on the late actor’s behalf.

"He would thank god, he would thank his parents, he would thank his ancestors for their guidance and their sacrifices, he would thank his incredible team," she said after accepting the award.
"He would say something beautiful, something inspiring, something that would amplify that little voice inside of all of us that tells you you can, that tells you to keep going, that calls you back to what you are meant to be doing at this moment in history."

Boseman also received a nomination for Best Actor at the 93rd Academy Awards for his role in Ma Rainey's Black Bottom.
