Stephen A. Smith got into a back-and-forth with Jemele Hill over the ESPN analyst's comments about Cari Champion, the former host of "First Take." It all started when Champion called out Smith by bringing up his old comments about Ray Rice's domestic violence incident and by siding with Michelle Beadle in her ongoing feud with Smith.

The ESPN star didn't appreciate Champion's words and reminded her of who brought her to the network. Hill then chimed in, saying that while Smith helped her career when she was a columnist in Orlando, the same can't be said of Champion.

“Being able to be on ‘Quite Frankly’ and being seen nationally was definitely something that has helped me throughout my career. Make no mistake about it… I’m not trying to discredit anything you have done for me. But you say you helped Cari get to 'First Take.'

"I know that unequivocally is not true. I’ll just say what it is. Do I think you put in a good word here and there for Cari, I’m not saying that you didn’t. But you make it seem like you scouted her at the Tennis Channel, you brought her over to ESPN and that’s how she got ‘First Take.’ I can tell you 1000 percent the man who did that was Gerry Matalon.”

The veteran analyst responded to Hill on his "Straight Shooter" show on Monday, saying he was the one who convinced Skip Bayless to add Champion to the "First Take" lineup.

“Skip was running ‘First Take’ but Skip had his reservations,” Smith said. “It was not only up to me to decide if Cari Champion would be on ‘First Take,’ it was up to me to convince Skip because he had the ultimate say. Cari Champion wasn’t going to convince Skip. You weren’t going to convince Skip, Jemele.”

Jemele Hill had dating rule that included Stephen A. Smith and Skip Bayless

Jemele Hill spent over a decade at ESPN, sharing her time between on- and off-camera duties. She started in 2006 as a columnist, mostly covering the NBA.

After she became an on-air talent, Hill adopted a dating rule that included Stephen A. Smith and Skip Bayless.

"If they ask me about Stephen A. Smith or Skip Bayless, immediately that dude was canceled," Hill said on the "Dan Le Batard Show" back in March. "Immediately. Like no, I don’t want anything to do with you.”
