Chris Grier’s departure doesn’t appear to be sitting well with the Miami Dolphins star receiver.

A mutual decision was announced on Friday for the general manager and the club to part ways. On his X account, Tyreek Hill posted a sad face emoji when word of this came out.

Grier had been with the Dolphins for over two decades, working his way up from a scout in the early 2000s before eventually becoming the GM.

It’s a post he has held since 2016. Grier is responsible for Hill coming to Miami, trading five draft picks to the Kansas City Chiefs to acquire the speedy receiver. After the deal, he paid Hill the massive wages KC were unwilling to give him. He signed Hill to a four-year deal worth $120 million. That was readjusted to include more guaranteed money last year.

In a statement on the team website, Monday, Dolphins Board Chairman and Managing General Partner Stephen M. Ross said:

“As I assessed the state of the team and in my discussions with Chris, it became clear to both of us that change could not wait. We must improve — in 2025, 2026 and beyond — and it needs to start right now.”

For the time being, Champ Kelly will fill Grier’s shoes on an interim basis while they search for a new GM to take charge permanently in the future. Grier has been working in the NFL for over 30 years, starting as an intern with the New England Patriots before being promoted to regional scout.

The Dolphins currently sit third in the AFC East with a 2-7 record following a 28-6 loss to the Baltimore Ravens on Thursday. They are in danger of missing the playoffs for a second consecutive season.

Hill expected to be released by Dolphins

We won’t see Tyreek Hill in a Dolphins uniform again this season and possibly ever again. The five-time All-Pro receiver suffered torn ligaments and dislocated his knee in Week 4 against the New York Jets, ruling him out for the 2025 season.

Last off-season, he signed a three-year extension worth $90 million. That said, the final year of the contract comes with a cap hit of $52 million. His salary next year comes at a price of $29.9 million, with $11 million of that guaranteed. He only gets that money, though, if he’s on the roster on the third day of the 2026 league year.

He’d be due a $5 million bonus on that same day, meaning the Dolphins would have to pay him $16 million if he’s still on the roster by March 14.

Given how long it takes to recover from his current injuries, he’s unlikely to be physically fit to play, making him a probable cut at some point before then.

Hill has been in the league since 2016 and hinted at retirement earlier this year. He holds two Miami franchise records for most receptions in a season at 119 in 2022 and 2023. His 1,799 receiving yards in 2023, meanwhile, are the most in a single season for this club.
