Titans owner's bad blood with Mike Vrabel led to Patriots' snub of Tony Pollard trade: Report

Mike Vrabel left the Tennessee Titans after the 2023 season after six seasons as head coach. Vrabel is now with the New England Patriots, and attempted a trade deadline move for Titans RB1 Tony Pollard. However, he didn't get any favors from his former employers.

Rachel Nichols wrote on X (formerly Twitter),

"The Titans reportedly would not trade with the Patriots yesterday at the NFL trade deadline because…Tennessee’s owner had ill will about the end of Coach Mike Vrabel’s tenure there. The Patriots had been interested in RB Tony Pollard and edge rusher Adrian Key, according to those reports."

The report highlights the tension between Vrabel and Titans owner Amy Adams Strunk. The Titans made two trades before Tuesday’s deadline, but none involved the team coached by one of their most successful coaches in recent history.

Vrabel led the Titans to four consecutive winning seasons and three postseason berths, with a particularly magical season in 2021, as he guided the team to the best record in the AFC. However, he was dismissed after a 6-11 record in the 2023 season.

Vrabel didn't stay unemployed for too long as he served as a coaching and personnel consultant for the Cleveland Browns in 2024. He then agreed a deal with the New England Patriots to serve as the head coach replacing Jerod Mayo for the 2025 season.

Mike Vrabel's Patriots top the AFC East entering Week 10

Mike Vrabel's appointment as Patriots head coach is turning out to be one of the best coaching hires of the season. The former Titans HC has led the Patriots to a 7-2 record and to the top of the AFC East.

The Patriots are ahead of archrivals, the Buffalo Bills (6-2), Miami Dolphins (2-7), and New York Jets (1-7). Robert Kraft's side is now on track to make the playoffs for the first time since 2021.

On the other hand, the Tennessee Titans have started the season with a league-worst 1-8 record. One of their losses this season occurred against the Patriots as Mike Vrabel led his troops to a 31-13 win in Nissan Stadium in Nashville, Tennessee. The Titans aren't playing in Week 20 due to their bye.

All signs point to yet another offseason of rebuild for the Titans, while the Patriots might be back in perennial playoff contention. The Titans and Patriots might not be divisional rivals, but it seems that there's no love lost between the Tennessee ownership and their former head coach.
