Los Angeles Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert put in a gutsy performance against the Philadelphia Eagles on Monday to lead the team to a 22-19 overtime win.

Following the win, Herbert had an awkward exchange with sideline reporter Laura Rutledge. Rutledge, who asked the Chargers quarterback for a postgame interview, was declined initially.

"I just want to celebrate with my teammates," Herbert said before Rutledge asked for the interview again.

Although Herbert answered questions from Rutledge, the franchise quarterback was criticized by Barstool Sports host Kayce Smith for refusing the interview on the first time of asking.

"Hey bro, you get paid $262 million to play football," Smith wrote on X. "When the prime time broadcast wants an interview, you stand there like EVERYBODY ELSE does and do the interview. Grow up."

Smith's words didn't sit well with some fans who argued that NFL players are not paid to give postgame interviews. Smith hit back at the critics:

"Anybody saying they’re not paid to do interviews clearly has no idea how this business model works. How the fuc* do you think the NFL would be watched (aka make money to pay these contracts) without networks??? Let’s all use our brains! Thank you!"

While Justin Herbert's interaction with Laura Rutledge divided fans on social media, the NFL reporter saw the funny side of things. Rutledge shared an edited video of her interaction with the Chargers quarterback, writing:

"Rough day at the office 🤣🤣 let’s all have a good laugh and move on!"

Justin Herbert hailed as "superhero" by Chargers coach after overtime win against Eagles

Herbert completed just 12 of 25 passes for 139 yards with one touchdown and one pick and while his numbers weren't great, his resilience and grit drew praise from Chargers coach Jim Harbaugh.

“Justin Herbert, he’s a superhero,” the Chargers coach said. “He’s a competitive maniac. He was even stiff-arming guys with a broken hand — he had surgery a week ago.

"It felt like we were in a movie where the quarterback’s doing things and you get to the point where you go, ‘OK, it’s getting a little unrealistic.’ That’s what it felt like to me. He refuses to lose. He’s tough as they get. He’s a superhero quarterback.”

Herbert was seen with a bloodied hand after the game and the team will hope he will be available for their remaining games against the Kansas City Chiefs, Dallas Cowboys, Houston Texans and Denver Broncos.
