After what seemed like forever, Shedeur Sanders is set for his first NFL start when Cleveland visits Las Vegas to face the Raiders on Sunday. Sanders is getting the nod amid fellow rookie quarterback Dillon Gabriel’s injury. The Colorado alum has expressed his feelings ahead of the game. Speaking at a presser on Wednesday, he said:“I think it’s gonna be exciting. I know y’all are gonna be there. I know you can’t miss this moment. It’ll be definitely exciting. We’re going out there with a purpose, going out there mentally ready. No distractions, no anything. And, you know, I’d be excited.”Sanders also committed himself to becoming the one quarterback who breaks the Browns’ run of failed quarterbacks going back more than 20 years. Names like Johnny Manziel, Brandon Weeden, Tim Couch, and Baker Mayfield have all failed to establish a long-term impact with the Browns. With his long-awaited opportunity arriving, the fifth-round pick pledged to be at his best as he leads Cleveland’s offense against the Raiders. He said:“I would be doing a disservice to myself and a disservice to the organization if I don’t feel like I am the guy. I’m doing everything I need to prepare to be the best version of myself possible.”Shedeur Sanders does need a performance to shut his doubters up. The 23-year-old got his first snap for the Browns in the second half of their loss to the Baltimore Ravens last Sunday. It was not the debut many of his supporters had hoped for, however, as the quarterback struggled. He completed only four of 16 passes for 47 yards and an interception while getting sacked twice. He will need better numbers on Sunday to lay any enduring claim to the starting role with the Browns.Kevin Stefanski acknowledges “significant growth” from Shedeur SandersKevin Stefanski has come under criticism several times this season for Shedeur Sanders’ lack of playing time. Left with no choice after Gabriel’s injury, the coach is handing Sanders his first NFL start next Sunday. What’s more, he’s finally acknowledging “significant growth” from the quarterback, raising hopes about his future. The coach said on Wednesday about Sanders’ preparedness for his scheduled start:“Just learning NFL defenses for young players, learning NFL defenses…all that work adds up. I see significant growth from Shedeur.”The season is long spent, but with enough time for Sanders to announce himself to the league in proper fashion.
