The Las Vegas Raiders appear to be looking towards next season. On Tuesday, the team traded wide receiver Jakobi Meyers to the Jacksonville Jaguars, getting a fourth and a sixth-round pick in return.

Fans had plenty to say about the blockbuster move.

“Raiders treating their roster like a clearance sale — “Everything must go!” said one person.

“From Geno Smith to T-Law,” said another.
“The Raiders really going for that 2023 Seahwks look,” said a fan.

The Raiders are 2-6 after losing 30-29 to the Jacksonville Jaguars last weekend. Meyers moves from Geno Smith to former first overall pick Trevor Lawrence and the Jaguars, who are 5-3 and in contention for a playoff spot.

The Jaguars have been hurting at the wide receiver position with Brian Thomas Jr. struggling to maintain his form from last season, while this team has been in desperate need of a playmaker at that position.

Two-way college phenom Travis Hunter missed their game last week through injury, and it’s uncertain when he’ll be back. The Raiders have struggled over the past couple of seasons as have the Jags. Jacksonville have made the playoffs just once since 2018, finishing with a 3-14 record in 2024.

Meyers is in his seventh NFL season, registering his first year with over 1,000 receiving yards in 2024, where he put up 1,027. It appeared like a move the North Carolina State product had wanted for a while, as there was widespread speculation he wasn’t happy with the Raiders. In August, he requested a trade, but the club refused to grant him that wish at that time.

In September, he stated that he had sought a larger contract when he moved from the New England Patriots to the Raiders. In March 2023, he signed a three-year deal with Las Vegas for $33 million.

Raiders get an “A” for Meyers trade

While it feels like a fire sale is going on with the Raiders, some feel that getting Meyers off their hands is a good think for Las Vegas. Jacksonville.com writer Ryan O’Halloran says:

“The Raiders get an “A” for the move since they were able to move a disgruntled player who wasn’t going to be re-sign with them.”

He gave the Jaguars a B grade for the move simply because, for him, two picks for a player on an expiring contract is a tall price. It’s being seen as a desperate move for the Jags, who have an opportunity to make the playoffs and are thin at the receiver spot. They’ve also lost Brenton Strange and Hunter Long to injuries at the tight end spot, two assets in the receiving department.

Meyers has made 426 catches in his NFL career for 4,944 yards and 20 touchdowns in 98 games played.
