Patrick Mahomes takes the blame for missed throws vs Broncos amid Chiefs' fading playoff chances

Three-time Super Bowl champion Patrick Mahomes took responsibility for the Kansas City Chiefs' offensive struggles in the last few games.

While speaking with the media on Wednesday, Mahomes said he's failed to make impactful throws, thereby stalling drives and forcing the offense off the field.

"I'm just not making the throws," Mahomes said as per SI. "It's pretty much the biggest thing. Guys are getting open and giving me chances to make the plays down the field and I just gotta give them chances to make plays.

"And I think that's some thing I can learn from with guys like Xavier (Worthy) early, is that it might not be the perfect pass that's going to be a touchdown catch, but if I throw the ball and just give him a chance to make a play, he'll make a play on it. And then he can score a touchdown from there. So, being better there and giving guys chances usually works out."

The Chiefs have the fifth-ranked passing offense this season, averaging 248.9 yards. However, they are 16th in rushing, averaging 115.3 yards.

Last week, they suffered a 22-19 loss to the Denver Broncos, further denting their playoff chances. Mahomes completed 29 of 45 passes for 276 yards and one touchdown. He also threw an interception, posting a 79.5 rating.

The Chiefs (5-5) are third in the AFC West behind the Chargers and the Broncos.

Ex-Eagles star Jason Kelce shares his assessment of Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs in 2025

Jason Kelce is surprised that the Kansas City Chiefs have struggled to win games this season. On Wednesday's episode of the "New Heights" podcast, the Super Bowl LII champion said the Chiefs looked better than they did last season, when they finished 15-2.

"If this year's Chiefs team played last year Chiefs team, who wins? I'm taking this year's," Kelce said. "That's what I'm saying. Somehow you guys are better, but you're sitting at 5-5, you're just not being, you're not executing as well at the end of games, which is very uncharacteristic of Pat and what you guys have."

Last season, Patrick Mahomes helped the Chiefs reach the Super Bowl, where they were crushed by the Eagles, ending their dreams of becoming the first team to win three consecutive Lombardis.
