New England Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel has reacted to Cam Newton’s criticism of the Patriots’ hot form as “fool’s gold.” Newton commented on the Patriots’ successful run so far this campaign on an episode of “First Take” last week. The former Patriots quarterback didn’t seem impressed with the success Vrabel’s team has enjoyed this season, although he acknowledged quarterback Drake Maye plays good football. He said:“It has fool’s gold written all over them, cubic zirconia middle of the mall. And yes, is Drake Maye playing good football? Absolutely. I would like to attest his great play to one specific person that I know too well, Josh McDaniels. Now Josh McDaniels may not be a great head coach, but he is a brilliant offensive mind.”Mike Vrabel responded to the comment on Monday during his weekly appearance on WEEI. The Patriots’ head coach said:“What are we gonna do? Put Cam Newton’s clips up there? We’d rather put our clips or the Bengals’ clips. I don’t think that’s even remotely close to how we should inspire our players to play better.”Vrabel also said:“Nothing's weird to me. Because people could come on the radio, you know? Whatever. It's just things that get their attention, or we are okay with that. I promise you we were okay with anything that anybody says.”The Patriots have won eight straight games this season, with their last defeat coming in a Week 3 matchup against the Pittsburgh Steelers. Drake Maye has been a key factor in the Patriots’ run, leading the league in passing yards with 2,836 yards for 20 touchdowns and five interceptions.Maye’s form has earned him chants from fans demanding his recognition with the MVP award at the end of the season.Mike Vrabel credits Drake Maye for his move to New EnglandMike Vrabel cited Maye’s ability, which he observed from tapes, as part of the factors that influenced his decision to join the Patriots. He was asked during his appearance on WEEI what role seeing Maye play had in his conviction to join the franchise. He said:“I think it had a lot to do with it and how he reacted. And again, [his rookie year was] a difficult season, and how he handled things, or his ability, certainly stood out.”The quarterback will be looking to lead the Patriots to their ninth straight win this season when they face the Cincinnati Bengals next Sunday.
