Philip Rivers was signed to the Indianapolis Colts' practice squad, the team announced on Wednesday. Rivers, 44, has not played in the league for five years, but the Colts signed the QB out of retirement after Daniel Jones' season-ending Achilles injury.

Later on Wednesday, analyst Kyle Brandt suggested that fans might see Rivers play in a playoff game this season, over some of the top MVP QBs in the AFC.

"This is so strange," Brandt said on "Good Morning Football," "The fact that we are here, and the idea now where the state of the nation is, is that Lamar (Jackson) and (Joe) Burrow and (Patrick) Mahomes maybe likely won't start a playoff game, but Philip Rivers is going to start a playoff game in 2025, or a regular season game, maybe playoff game ... If Philip Rivers starts the game, he plays terribly.

"I don't even care if he's out there starting in 2025 for the Colts, let alone playing well, let alone in some miracle winning, going on some sort of Disney movie run. It's the story of the year."

Patrick Mahomes' Chiefs (6-7) and Lamar Jackson's Ravens (6-7) might struggle to make the playoffs this season. However, Josh Allen's Bills (9-4) have a better record and control their destiny of making the postseason.

The Colts (8-5) are third in the AFC South, but have lost three games in a row. While Indy is still in the race for the playoffs, the team needs to win a few more games in the final stretch of the season.

Earlier this year, Rivers was named as one of the 26 modern-era semifinalists for the Pro Football Hall of Fame Class of 2026. However, if Rivers is elevated to the Colts' active roster this season, his candidacy will be pushed back five years.

Per NFL rules, a player must be retired for at least five years to be in contention to enter the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

Rivers is an eight-time Pro Bowler. If he remains on Indy's practice squad, he will retain his Pro Football Hall of Fame Class of 2026 candidacy.
