Myles Garrett signed $160M contract because of Dak Prescott promise from Browns: Insider

NFL insider Bruce Drennan has said the Cleveland Browns spoke to Myles Garrett about potentially trading for Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott before the defensive end inked a contract extension. This reportedly led Garrett to decide to stay with the Browns after requesting a trade in February.

"If you recall, before the season started, I reported to you that I had a source who informed me that the Browns were talking to the Dallas Cowboys about a trade that would have brought Dak Prescott here to Cleveland," Drennan said on his show Wednesday.
"Of course, that deal did not come about, but consider this: I also was informed by that source back then that the Browns sat down with Garrett and shared that they were in talks with Dallas to try to improve the quarterback situation, and shortly after that meeting, he signed his extension."

Following a disappointing 3-14 campaign last year, Myles Garrett requested a trade after eight years with the Browns. However, the team was not willing to part ways with its star player.

In the end, the 2023 NFL Defensive Player of the Year agreed to a four-year extension worth $160 million with the team in March. This contract included a "no-trade" clause, meaning Garrett would be required to stay with the Browns through 2030.

In eight games this season, Garrett has tallied 31 total tackles, 10.0 sacks, 15 tackles for loss, and 15 quarterback hits.

The Browns are 2-6 after last Sunday's 32-13 loss at the hands of the New England Patriots. Their quarterback room remains a major concern for Coach Kevin Stefanski. The Browns traded away veteran Joe Flacco, who started the season as the QB1, to the Bengals and named rookie Dillon Gabriel as the starter. Shedeur Sanders is Gabriel's backup but has yet to take the field for the Browns.

NFL insider Adam Schefter clarifies the Myles Garrett trade rumors

After the team's on-field struggles, the rumor mill has been churning about Garrett potentially being traded by the Browns. However, on Wednesday, NFL insider Adam Schefter poured cold water over these rumors, stating that the six-time Pro Bowler will not be traded ahead of the Nov. 4 deadline.

"For those wondering if the Browns would consider trading Myles Garrett by Tuesday's deadline, the answer is, in the words of one source, 'No Chance.'" Schefter tweeted. "Source added: 'People have a better chance of winning the lottery.'"

During their Week 8 loss to the Patriots, the DE set a franchise record for the most sacks in a single game (5). Unfortunately for the Browns, it was not enough to improve on their two-win season.

The Browns are next scheduled to face the New York Jets on Sunday, with kickoff at 1 p.m. ET.
