Liam Coen seemingly throws shade at Trevor Lawrence over Jaguars QB's inability to read defenses

Jacksonville Jaguars coach Liam Coen seemingly threw some shade at his quarterback, Trevor Lawrence on Monday. He highlighted how the Pro Bowler struggles to read defenses, costing them chances to score.

"There was a few (offensive plays) that you'd like to have back," Coen said while talking about their 36-29 loss at the Houston Texans on Sunday.
"We had Dyami (Brown) on the post route in the third quarter, I believe it was, that we'd like to have back. That we have an opportunity there as the No. 1 read to take and possibly take a touchdown or explosive (play). You know, there was definitely some pressure yesterday at times that may have affected some of the No. 1 or 2 reads in the progression."

The play Coen referenced proved to be inconsequential.

Although Lawrence looked away Brown on the right side of the field as the pocket pushed in from that side before throwing an incomplete pass on a first-and-10 at the Houston 34, Lawrence found Austin Trammell for 18 yards on the next play. That led to Travis Etienne's 6-yard TD run for a 29-10 lead with 1:33 left in the third quarter. (Lawrence's two-point conversion pass failed.)

While he led Jacksonville to scores on both of its third-quarter possessions, Trevor Lawrence's performance in the fourth quarter was part of the reason why the Jaguars blew their 29-10 lead. The quarterback failed to turn Jacksonville's three fourth-quarter possessions into points. He suffered three sacks in that span as well.

The Texans scored 20 unanswered points to take a 30-29 lead with 31 seconds left in the game, taking advantage of two Jacksonville three-and-outs.

On the first of the three-and-outs, Lawrence never threw a pass and was sacked on third-and-9. On the second, he scrambled for 3 yards on first-and-10 and was incomplete on third-and-4 with the Jaguars clinging to a 29-24 lead with 6:16 left in the game.

Jacksonville, which trailed by one point when it got the ball back at its 33 with 27 seconds remaining in the game, ran four plays on its final possession.

On the first, Trevor Lawrence was sacked for a loss of 9 yards. On the second, he scrambled for 21 yards to the Jacksonville 45. On the third, his completion to Parker Washington was offset by a 10-yard penalty. On the final play of the game, at the Jacksonville 35 with seven seconds left, he was sacked and lost the ball as he went to the ground. Houston lineman Sheldon Rankins grabbed the ball in the air and rambled 32 yards for a touchdown as time expired.

Lawrence completed 13 of 23 passes for 158 yards and just one touchdown. He was also sacked five times, raising questions about his fit as the team's franchise quarterback. Fans are frustrated that he is not living up to the expectations of someone who agreed to a five-year $275 million extension in June 2024.

NFL analyst blasts the Jaguars for disappointing Week 10 loss to the Texans

On Monday's episode of "NFL on CBS," analyst Pete Prisco blasted the Jacksonville Jaguars, who gave up touchdown drives of 65, 51 and 93 yards to give up their lead.

"It told me that the Jaguars choked away a game. That's what it told me," Prisco said. "You're winning 29-10 against Davis Mills, and you lose that game by giving up 26 points in the fourth quarter? That should never happen.
"Kudos to Davis Mills, 'cause he made the plays when he needed to make the plays. It should never have happened. ... Jacksonville just stopped doing anything in the fourth quarter, and they allowed them to do that, go down the field and win the game."

The Jaguars (5-4) and Trevor Lawrence will next host the Los Angeles Chargers (7-3) at 1 p.m. ET on Sunday.
