The Arizona Cardinals received massive bad news on Friday as the team's coach announced that quarterback Kyler Murray won't return for the team's remaining games this season.
Arizona coach Jonathan Gannon announced that Murray, who has been on the injured reserve due to a foot injury he suffered in Week 5. The season-ending injury has cast a shadow of uncertainty over Murray's future with the team.
“He had some more tests done this week, went out of state, got another opinion on it,” Gannon said. “It's not progressing where it’s gonna make sense that he can go. So he's gonna be done for the year

According to NFL insider Dianna Russini, the Cardinals seemingly want to move on from Murray at the end of the season. However, the Cardinals quarterback is owed $36.8 million next season, making it a tough decision to cut him.

"It wouldn’t surprise a lot of league executives if the Cardinals decide to move on from 28-year-old Kyler Murray after this season. His contract complicates things because he’s still owed $36.8 million in fully guaranteed salary and bonuses for 2026.
"But even before his current foot injury, things weren’t clicking. The Cardinals could try to trade him or simply release him. Either way, after coach Jonathan Gannon said Murray is done for the season, the sense is that change is coming in the desert.
Cardinals could turn to Jacoby Brissett amid Kyler Murray's uncertain future
Kyler Murray signed a five-year, $230.5 million extension, with $105 million guaranteed, keeping him in Arizona through the 2028 season. In Murray's absence after Week 5, backup quarterback Jacoby Brissett took over the starting role for the Cardinals.
While Brisett has not been able to turn around Dallas' season, the quarterback leads the league in 2,188 passing yards (2188) and completions (204), Week 6 onwards.
Murray is under contract till next season and if the Cardinals decide to move from Kyler Murray, Arizona could turn to Brisett for the starting quarterback role next season.
