"I'm sure he is doing better this week than last week, but I still haven't been told that he'll for sure be back," Shanahan said. "We'll have to evaluate that when we get to Wednesday.
"I think it's too early to say. I don't think it's a long shot, but I know he is doing better. We'll see how he's doing Wednesday."

Brock Purdy suffered a toe injury in Week 1, which he further aggravated during their 26-21 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars in Week 4. During his absence, Mac Jones stepped up and took over as the team's quarterback.

He's been quite successful, leading the team to a 5-3 record after Sunday's 26-15 loss against the Houston Texans. The quarterback has tallied a total of 1597 yards and eight TDs passing for his team.

Unfortunately, Mac Jones suffered a knee contusion during Sunday's game. According to Shanahan, he will be considered day-to-day, raising concerns about his availability for Week 9's showdown against the Giants.

Before the start of the season, Purdy agreed to a five-year extension worth $265 million with the 49ers in May.

Mac Jones shares his thoughts after Week 9 loss to the Texans

In the post-game press conference, the quarterback expressed his disappointment with the outcome of Sunday's showdown against the Houston Texans.

"I feel bad for the defense," Jones said. "Because we didn't give them, you know, when you're out there for that many plays, it's just hard to just play. You get tired and even if you just get a couple of first downs, it gives some pressure off them.

"So, gotta be better there. Obviously want to score points. But even just moving the ball and flipping the field can be good. I thought we did that better in the second half but obviously got to put up points to beat people. So, like I said, try to get to the fourth quarter, and really our defense has come up clutch in those situations and so is our offense."

Against the Texans, Mac Jones completed 19 of 32 passes for 193 yards and two passing touchdowns. The 49ers will face the Giants on Nov. 2 at 1 p.m. ET.
