Cleveland Browns coach Kevin Stefanski stopped short of ruling out Deshaun Watson’s return this week. He gave an answer that deepened the uncertainty surrounding the team's quarterback situation.

Watson has been sidelined since he tore his Achilles against Cincinnati last season and underwent a second repair procedure in January. The question is not about progress but timing.

Stefanski fielded questions on Monday about Watson’s readiness. He was asked if the quarterback would rejoin practice this week.

"I'm not sure if that's what we're doing," Stefanski told reporters.

League sources told Cleveland.com that the Browns plan to delay opening Watson’s 21-day practice window until at least Week 12.

Once Cleveland opens the practice window, the clock starts ticking as the team will have 21 days to move Deshaun Watson to the active roster. Its other option is to keep him on the physically unable to perform list for the rest of the season. The three-week period would allow Stefanski and the front office to assess if Watson can participate without setbacks.

Watson could suit up as early as the Week 12 trip to Las Vegas if cleared. His workouts have been intense. Browns quarterback coach Bill Musgrave described the rehab routine as filled with box jumps, throwing sessions and strength training at the team's headquarters.

“I see him in the weight room all the time doing box jumps and doing all the exercises, things that they put them through before his Achilles,” Musgrave said on Nov. 3, via Cleveland.com.

“And then he’s out throwing some passes. I know at times when we’re meeting or when we’re doing other stuff during the afternoon, he seems like he’s working like crazy.”

Dillon Gabriel has started five games in Watson’s absence. He threw for 167 yards and two touchdowns in the 27-20 loss to the Jets on Sunday. Despite flashes of promise, he has a 1-4 record. The frustration has spilled into calls for fifth-round pick Shedeur Sanders to take over the QB1 role.

Cleveland coach Kevin Stefanski confirmed on Monday that Gabriel will remain the starter for Sunday’s home game against the Ravens. Watson’s eventual clearance could complicate the depth chart.
