The Minnesota Vikings chose to hand the QB1 job to J.J. McCarthy rather than attempting to land Aaron Rodgers in the offseason. However, they have struggled this season and are at the bottom of the NFC North.

Kay Adams made a bold prediction in May that the Vikings would win the 2026 Super Bowl. She reflected on it on Tuesday.

"This season has sadly, tragically, and some might say, foreseeably, been unfortunate for them," Adams said, via the "Up & Adams" show. ... If you are going to let J.J. McCarthy inherit the earth, a winner, somebody who has a good track record, somebody who you clearly believed in, he had to be better than what you'd be getting from Aaron Rodgers this year.

"My take was, this team better go to a Super Bowl. When you distill it in the test tubes in your ninth grade chemistry class, it is Super Bowl caliber team, offense, defense, ready to go best wide receiver in the game, coach, all of that. The quarterback you're choosing is McCarthy over Rodgers. I believe they could have had Aaron, and let's not waste it in this window."

Adams argued that McCarthy needs to lead Minnesota to a Super Bowl for the franchise's decision to make sense, which likely won't be the case. She added that the Vikings quarterback would have benefited from learning from Rodgers rather than being thrust immediately into the starting role.

Adams has the utmost belief in McCarthy, but she said he has failed to deliver in Minnesota's Super Bowl window. Adams questioned whether the Vikings front office made a mistake by betting on the 2024 first-round pick.

Minnesota is 2-4 this season with McCarthy under center. The team is on a three-game losing streak and three wins behind the Lions in its division.

J.J. McCarthy's struggles in 2025

J.J. McCarthy took the Vikings QB mantle after missing his rookie season due to a right meniscus tear. He started this season with a 27-24 win over the Chicago Bears. McCarthy completed 13 of 20 passes for 143 yards, two touchdowns and one interception.

However, it was followed by a defeat to the Falcons. McCarthy also suffered a high right ankle sprain that kept him sidelined for five games. He led the team to a win over the Lions upon his return, but has suffered three consecutive losses since.

The quarterback was placed in concussion protocol on Monday, following the 23-6 loss to the Green Bay Packers. McCarthy is doubtful for Minnesota's game against the Seattle Seahawks in Week 13.
