Shedeur Sanders' first start is one of the biggest stories in Week 12. The development is the next step in a storyline that has raged all year long with high highs and low lows. With the next chapter unfolding, the Cleveland Browns quarterback fielded questions on Wednesday, including one about how his teammates have rallied around him.

The video clip showed Sanders at the podium, staying composed and answering the question with a response that was seemingly by the book. In short, he said he needed to do his part to help win and not rely entirely on his more experienced teammates.

"A lot, I would say my teammates are a big portion of everything but at the same time, they have their own jobs they have to do also so I have to take that upon myself to know that I have the responsibility to bring this team a win on our side of the ball so I gotta do what's necessary to do that."

Jason Whitlock of the "Fearless" podcast posted a negative reaction on X on Thursday to how Sanders responded.

"Let me translate for you: 'The 2 victories we have had nothing to do with the previous quarterbacks. I can bring us an offensive win.' No coach or team operates on that logic. Shedeur's attitude/mindset is a nightmare," Whitlock posted.

The key phrase is that Sanders said his teammates had their own jobs to do, which can be interpreted as showing respect for their contributions, before he acknowledged that he couldn't ride their coattails in his first official start since leaving the Colorado Buffaloes.

Shedeur Sanders handed opportunity to do what Cam Ward could not

Earlier this year, Shedeur Sanders and Cam Ward were seen as equals. Months before April's 2025 NFL Draft, many expected Sanders and Ward to be selected within moments of each other. While Sanders slid, he has an opportunity to get a late win over Ward on Sunday in a certain way.

Sanders faces the Las Vegas Raiders on Sunday, who saw one of their only two wins come against the rookie Ward. If Sanders can defeat Pete Carroll and the Raiders in his first official start, he will have as many wins as Ward despite starting multiple months later and dropping to Day 3 of the NFL Draft.

It would be the first step on what Sanders has every reason to think of as a revenge tour against everyone in the NFL, including the Browns on some level, for skipping over him in the NFL Draft and on the depth chart for so long.

If Shedeur Sanders can go on a late-season run, it would leave many to question why the franchise waited so long to start the quarterback, which would place plenty of pressure on the front office that skipped over him for most of the year. Can Sanders seize the opportunity?
