The Cleveland Browns are backing Shedeur Sanders for the starting role for the second consecutive week as they host the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday.Sanders, who took over the starting role from fellow rookie Dillon Gabriel after he failed to clear the concussion protocol last week, has retained his role despite Gabriel being available for the game. While Sanders has been backed for Sunday's game, Mike Florio of NBC Sports said the Browns are not "celebrating" the rookie quarterback."It's a little much to think the Browns are in some way sabotaging QB Shedeur Sanders," Florio wrote. "But they definitely aren't celebrating him, either, and a new report from ESPN underscores the team's vague sense of ambivalence toward him."Jason Whitlock slammed the notion suggesting racism towards the former Colorado star, writing on X:"Browns refuse to celebrate 5th round pick. Racism."Sanders has had a troubled start to his NFL career as he had to wait until last week to make his first start of the season. However, his strong showing on his first start against the Raiders has seemingly turned the tide for the rookie quarterback.Browns coach Kevin Stefanski explained controversial Shedeur Sanders decision Although Shedeur Sanders had a strong showing against the Las Vegas Raiders last week, his Browns teammate Myles Garrett received the game ball from Cleveland coach Kevin Stefanski. The decision caused an uproar among Browns fans and Stefanski explained the decision. “Every game, you go into it trying to just highlight guys … Myles [Garrett] got a game ball. I thought he was probably pretty worthy. But you’re just trying to constantly recognize your guys … We spent time, as well, pointing out all of our guys and the jobs they did. Pointed out Gage Larvadain having a big punt return, which was huge for our team. "Your D-line doesn’t get 10 sacks unless the coverage is really good. Obviously, a rookie starting his first game on the road getting a win is huge. So you acknowledge all that with your team,” Stefanski said.Garrett had three sacks in the game, taking his tally to an NFL-leading 18 sacks in 11 games. The six-time Pro Bowler has been immense for the team despite their struggles this season.
