Pete Carroll’s coaching strategy on Monday night is being questioned.

Jason Whitlock is scratching his head as to why the Las Vegas Raiders coach only gave rookie running back Ashton Jeanty two carries in the first half of their 33-16 loss to the Dallas Cowboys. Jeanty is averaging 3.7 yards per carry this season.

The longtime NFL pundit doesn’t agree with Carroll’s approach of putting all the pressure on his quarterback, Geno Smith.

“2 carries for Ashton Jeanty? Make it make sense. Putting the load on Geno like he’s Dan Marino,” Whitlock tweeted.

The Cowboys are the third-worst defense in the NFL, allowing 381.3 yards per game. Against the run, Dallas has given up 131.4 yards per game.

In the game, the Raiders only ran the ball 12 times, collecting a mere 27 yards on the ground as a team. Jeanty only got six of those carries in the entire game. Smith, meanwhile, completed 27 of his 42 pass attempts for 238 yards, one touchdown and one interception.

Jeanty was expected to be a foundational piece of the Raiders’ offense this season, but he’s not been utilized as much as many would have expected. The Raiders are on a four-game losing streak and struggling to make much progress, with a 2-8 record.

On the offensive side of the ball, they’re averaging the third-fewest yards per game this season at 269.0. On the ground, they average 81.4 yards per game, the second lowest in the NFL.

Ashton Jeanty visibly frustrated

Try as he might, it was evident that Jeanty was visibly frustrated following Monday’s loss.

“I don’t call the plays… that’s up to the guys upstairs. So I just take whatever I get,” he said.

He adds that things haven’t been going the way he wanted for this team. Numerous times this year, Jeanty has looked like the forgotten man, with Carroll seemingly abandoning the run game in plenty of instances.

It’s left many to question what the plan is for Jeanty with this team because, by many accounts, there doesn’t appear to be a clear one at the moment. Carroll and Jeanty don’t seem to be getting along too well either. The coach called him and Don’t’e Thornton Jr. out for their costly mistakes in a loss to the Denver Broncos.

Jeanty hopes to get the ball more on Sunday when they battle the Cleveland Browns at Allegiant Stadium.
