J.J. McCarthy in Jamarcus Russell trajectory as new data shows magnitude of Vikings QB's disastrous start to NFL career

J.J. McCarthy's transition from college football to the NFL hasn't been smooth. The former Michigan Wolverines superstar missed his entire rookie season because of injury, and he's struggled mightily in the current campaign.

According to Anthony Amico, the start of McCarthy's career is rather worrisome. Amico wrote on X (formerly Twitter),

"J.J. McCarthy now ranks 851 out of 852 in EPA per Dropback among qualified passers since 2000, per Tru Media. The only player below McCarthy is JaMarcus Russell."

JaMarcus Russell was the first overall pick of the 2007 NFL Draft, and he's viewed as one of the biggest draft busts in league history. Russell ended his career with a stat line of 4,803 passing yards, 18 touchdowns, and 23 interceptions in 31 games during his three-year career.

McCarthy hasn't been able to translate his college football national championship-winning form to the NFL. He has compiled a stat line of 929 passing yards, six touchdowns, and 10 interceptions in 2025, and has struggled to find perennial All-Pro wide receiver Justin Jefferson.

J.J. McCarthy placed in concussion protocol ahead of Week 13

J. J. McCarthy is leaning towards missing the Vikings' Week 13 showdown against the Seattle Seahawks. According to ESPN, McCarthy has entered the concussion protocol after reporting symptoms on a flight home from Green Bay on Sunday night.

The report adds that this is the third injury the second-year quarterback has suffered this season. His injury woes started with a high right ankle sprain in Week 2, then there was a bruised right hand in Week 10, and now a concussion in Week 12.

Vikings head coach Kevin O'Connell hasn't ruled J.J. McCarthy out for the game at Seattle, but he did announce that backup Max Brosmer will take first-team reps until McCarthy is cleared to return.

Speaking on his starting QB's concussion, O'Connell said,

"We'll go through the steps and phases of it. I am not ready to make any sort of designation for the game or anything like that. We will let the process play out, but at the same time, I do think it is important for everybody to know that there is total transparency. I am going to totally, totally defer to the medical staff and the professionals on that one as well as J.J."

McCarthy currently ranks last in QBR (24.8), touchdown/interception ratio (0.6), and completion percentage (54.1). He and the Vikings face an uphill task of reaching the playoffs in the stacked NFC North.
