San Francisco 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan confirmed on Saturday that the team voided wideout Brandon Aiyuk's contract for a reported $27 million in guaranteed money for next year. Aiyuk, who signed a four-year, $120 million extension with San Francisco last year, will lose his guaranteed money since he failed to participate in meetings and other team activities in the offseason.
Shanahan said Aiyuk's contract situation was the first of its kind in his coaching career.
"I've been coaching over 20 years, and I've never been in a situation where a contract's been voided," Shanahan said, via 49ersWebzone.com. "So it was extremely unusual to me. ... It takes a lot of things to get a contract voided. Honestly, I've never dealt with that in my career or been in any building that's had that. So it was unusual, but that's stuff that I can't get into right now."
According to reports, Aiyuk was informed of his guarantees being voided in July. He did not contest the team's decision.

Aiyuk hasn't played for the 49ers since suffering a serious knee injury in Week 7 last season. However, Shanahan is hoping that the wideout can return to action later this season.
There is a feeling among some fans that Aiyuk might have already played his last snap with San Francisco.
The 49ers drafted Aiyuk in the first round in 2020. He has posted 294 catches for 4,305 yards and 25 TDs with them.
