Brock Purdy opened up about the deteriorating relationship between the San Francisco 49ers and Brandon Aiyuk on Wednesday. During training camp in July, the team voided all of the wide receiver's guaranteed money in 2026.Aiyuk reportedly missed team meetings and activities, failed to attend required rehab sessions and did not communicate well with the organization."I can't really speak to it much because it's his situation," Purdy said, via KNBR. "All the contract stuff has nothing to do with me, but it does suck because I love BA, and all the moments we've had on the field together have been awesome. It sucks right now, it's all grey and we don't really know what's going on. That's all I can say to that."Aiyuk signed a four-year, $120 million contract extension after a long holdout with San Francisco in August 2024. He was set to receive $24.9 million as an option bonus next season, plus a $1.2 million base salary, for approximately $26-27 million guaranteed. The 49ers argued that Aiyuk's absences violated the terms of his contract. By voiding the guarantees, the team cuts ties with him financially without releasing him. San Francisco can either release Aiyuk as a free agent after this season ends or trade him. The wide receiver didn't file a grievance to challenge the voiding. Speculation suggest that he may want out of the team.Aiyuk suffered a torn ACL, MCL and meniscus in Week 7 of the 2024 season and hasn't played since. The 49ers reportedly tried to move him in the offseason but couldn't find a trade partner due to his injury.Kyle Shanahan on Brandon Aiyuk's situation with the 49ersSan Francisco 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan addressed the Brandon Aiyuk saga on Nov. 22. He revealed that the team voided approximately $27 million in guaranteed money from the wideout's 2026 contract."I've been coaching over 20 years, and I've never been in a situation where a contract's been voided," Shanahan told reporters. "It's extremely unusual to me. It takes a lot of things to get a contract voided. I've never dealt with that in my career and been in any building that's had that."Shanahan added that what happened in July had nothing to do with the future and that he would love to have Aiyuk back on the field. The coach wants him to get healthier and help the team out.San Francisco (9-4) is entering its bye week and is third in the NFC West.
