Eric Dickerson pushed back against LeSean McCoy and Pacman Jones after the two former NFL players criticized his stance on Saquon Barkley’s chase for the single-season rushing record last season. He said the narrative portraying him as unsupportive was inaccurate.
Dickerson has held the NFL’s single-season rushing mark of 2,105 yards since 1984. McCoy and Jones reacted critically to comments Dickerson made last season as Barkley closed in on the milestone.
Speaking on the "All the Smoke" podcast on Thursday, the former Los Angeles Rams star said he wanted to publicly clarify the situation.
"I saw Shady McCoy said something I did not say, Pacman Jones said something I did not say, I saw Shady at the Super Bowl," Dickerson said.

"And I said, Man, let me explain something. First of all, records are records, and I don't think anybody wants their record broke. I've never, I would never hate on nothing running back. That's just not me. And I said, if you break the record, he breaks it. Do I want to break it?
"No. I mean, I'm not, excuse me I'm not no b*tch, right? I've always said this, if somebody breaks my record, I want it to be my son, that's it. And if somebody breaks it, I ain't gonna lose no sleep over."
The context traces back to comments Dickerson made in December 2024, when he said he didn’t expect or want Saquon Barkley to reach the record. McCoy later responded on his show by saying Dickerson wanted an asterisk next to Barkley’s season because of the 17-game schedule. He pointed out that Dickerson needed one more game than O.J. Simpson to set his mark.
Saquon Barkley shifts focus to Eagles offense amid Lions showdown

Saquon Barkley heads into Sunday’s matchup against Detroit averaging 3.9 yards per carry. This is a decline from his dominant 2024 season when he posted 2,005 rushing yards on 5.8 yards per attempt with 15 scores. This year, he has reached the end zone six times through 10 games.
The Philadelphia star addressed teammate AJ Brown’s comments about the offense’s recent struggles and said the criticism was fair. The Eagles managed 10 points in Monday’s narrow win over Green Bay, and Barkley acknowledged the unit must improve.
"I think that's a conversation no matter if we score 10 points, or if we score 40," Saquon Barkley said.
"That's just the nature of this business. You have to have the sense of urgency and the mindset to put what you did the week before in the past and move on and try to improve no matter."
Barkley said the team cannot rely on the defense each week to secure wins and stressed that the locker room isn’t fractured, despite the outside noise surrounding Brown’s remarks.
