Odell Beckham Jr. sparked a wave of criticism this week after his comments in October resurfaced on social media. He suggested that a five-year, $100 million contract is not enough to last an athlete a lifetime.
“I always explain this to people,” Beckham said, via "The Pivot Podcast." “You give somebody a five-year, $100 million contract. That’s five years for 60. We’re getting taxed. That’s 12 million a year you have to spend, use, save, invest, flaunt, whatever.”
The clip drew backlash, with many calling the argument out of touch, including former NFL nose tackle and LSU champion Breiden Fehoko.
"Not being able to live off a 100 million dollar contract pre taxes is the dumbest sh*t I’ve ever heard. You’ll see half that (taxes). Take that half and sub out agent fees 1.5%, Union dues, and 401k. Out of that 100 mill you’re probably left with 35 million at the very least," Fehoko tweeted on Thursday.

However, Beckham's remarks also implied lack of monetary literacy among athletes. He warned that many are never taught how to manage sudden wealth and that a big contract can disappear quickly due to unchecked expenses.
NFL legend Shannon Sharpe was among those who disagreed with the notion.
“Do you really need 10 houses? Do you really need 15 cars? Do you need to buy everybody in your family a mansion that costs $1 million, $2 million?” Sharpe said on Wednesday, via "Nightcap."
Beckham reponded to the backlash on Wednesday.
“Boy u can’t say nothin in this world nowadays, that’s why I been in my own lane my own world n put the way. People love to take Shxt completely outta context to rationalize a statement in their own head that makes sense to them… what a world,” Beckham tweeted.
Odell Beckham Jr. ready for NFL comeback
Odell Beckham Jr., who is a free agent, said that he’s preparing for an NFL return.
“I’m good. Just training, getting back in shape, doing all that, staying ready," Beckham said on Tuesday, via "ManningCast." "Just feel like there’s some more left in the tank. I’m just waiting for that opportunity.”
Beckham last played for the Miami Dolphins in 2024, appearing in nine games and catching nine passes for 55 yards before he was waived. He also served a six-game suspension this campaign for violating the league’s PED policy.
Beckham has 575 catches, 7,987 yards, 59 touchdowns, a Super Bowl win, three Pro Bowls and two Second Team All-Pro selections in his career.
