Drake Maye gets real about the pressure of becoming seven-time Super Bowl champion Tom Brady's successor for the New England Patriots. On "FOX NFL Sunday" with Rob Gronkowski, the quarterback said he is trying to make his own name in the league rather than following in Brady's footsteps.

"Just try to be myself," Maye said. "Don't try to be the greatest of all time. I think the biggest thing is, I just respect it. Respect what he did for the game. Watching the old tape is one of my favorite things to do.
"I was sitting there watching the Hall of Fame speech last year, talking about no shortcuts. I'm just trying to pull what I can from him and appreciate his greatness."

Tom Brady helped turn the Patriots into a dynasty, winning six Super Bowls with them during his 20-season stint. However, since his departure after the 2019 season, the team has been struggling to enjoy the same kind of success it did under the retired NFL GOAT. They enjoyed a temporary moment of triumph under Mac Jones. But he was then traded after a disappointing 4-13 season in 2023.

Last year, the Patriots acquired Drake Maye with the third overall pick. During his rookie debut campaign, he initially served as the backup to Jacoby Brissett. However, after the team's 1-4 start to the season, the rookie was named as the QB1.

Drake Maye ended his rookie year helping the Patriots to a 4-13 record and tallying 2,276 yards and 15 TDs passing. However, this season, things are going well for Mike Vrabel and his team.

The New England Patriots are 6-2 after Sunday's 32-13 victory over the Cleveland Browns. In eight games, Drake Maye has recorded 2026 yards and 15 TDs passing, along with two rushing touchdowns.

Tom Brady shares his honest thoughts on Drake Maye

During an interview with SI on Monday, the retired seven-time Super Bowl champion had high praise for Drake Maye.

"Well, I think he's obviously very smart and detailed," Brady said. "I always appreciate the quarterbacks in the NFL that read coverages, throw to the open guy, play on time. Josh (McDaniels) is just so good at instructing him in that way. He's really doing it. He's just taking the coaching. He's learning and every week he seems to be getting better."

Against the Browns on Sunday, Maye completed 18 of 24 passes for 282 yards and three touchdowns. With a five-game winning streak, the Patriots sit on top of the AFC East, their first time leading the division since Tom Brady's departure in March 2020.

Mike Vrabel and his team are next scheduled to face the Falcons on Nov. 2 at 1 p.m. ET.
