The Colts' quarterback situation took a major turn on Sunday as Daniel Jones suffered a torn right Achilles during the 36-19 loss to the Jaguars. He was expected to receive a huge contract following his strong start this season, but the injury changes things for him and the franchise.

ESPN's Bill Barnwell provided an assessment of how Jones' injury would impact his market value and contract options with Indianapolis.

"The Colts were surely going to bring Jones back in 2026 after the end of his one-year deal, either by using the franchise tag or signing him to a new contract." Barnwell wrote on Monday. "Those negotiations suddenly seem more difficult for all parties involved.

"The 28-year-old was looking at a minimum of $46 million more in guaranteed money from the franchise tag, if not more on a long-term deal. Now, that's up in the air. The Colts could get creative and offer Jones something less to try to find common ground on a deal, but that could allow Jones to hit the open market."

The Colts would likely be hesitant to commit a $46.1 million franchise tag to Jones if his availability for next season remains unclear.

He completed 261 of 384 passes for 3,101 yards, 19 touchdowns and eight interceptions in 13 games.

Daniel Jones' injury vs. Jaguars

Daniel Jones' injury occured with 35 seconds remaining in the first quarter as he attempted to avoid defensive pressure. He planted his foot to throw a pass but went down, grabbing the back of his right leg. Colts backup quarterback Riley Leonard took over under center, completing18 of 29 passes for 145 yards and one interception.

Indianapolis coach Shane Steichen addressed the media following Sunday's loss and shared an update on Jones' injury.

"It’s not looking good,” Steichen said. “Anytime you lose a guy that puts in so much work and so much effort, and is always there for his team, and showing up with a fibula injury, and goes out there and freaking plays, just so much respect for him. Just so much respect.”

Jones was already playing through a fractured left fibula when the noncontact injury happened. He repeatedly slammed his helmet onto the ground in frustration. Jones was able to walk to the locker room but likely knew that damage was already done.
