Cowboys GM Jerry Jones breaks silence on Marshawn Kneeland’s death

Dallas Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones spoke publicly for the first time about the tragic death of Marshawn Kneeland on Thursday. He expressed his grief and discussed the defensive end's impact during his tenure with the organization.

"Devastated," Jones said on Tuesday, via 105.3 The Fan. "Hard to believe. It was in the middle of the night when we all got the news. As a teammate, (Kneeland) touched everybody in many different ways.
"It's just a time when you acknowledge there are no answers. It makes you want to live life to the fullest. His death is such a national awareness thing. There's no doubt in my mind that (the team will move forward) in memory of what he was all about. He was very unique in his passion for the game."

Kneeland's death was ruled a suspected suicide by self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety. His death came just three days after his "Monday Night Football" performance against Arizona. Kneeland recovered a blocked punt for a touchdown, recording his his first score in the NFL.

He carried an urn containing his mother's ashes throughout the season as a tribute to her memory.

The Cowboys also released a statement following the tragic incident.

"Marshawn was a beloved teammate and member of our organization," the statement read. "Our thoughts and prayers regarding Marshawn are with his girlfriend Catalina and his family."

The NFL community honored Kneeland's memory with moments of silence before Week 10 games. Several team emphasized the availability of mental health resources. The NFL and the Cowboys provided counseling resources to those struggling with grief or crisis.

Marshawn Kneeland's NFL career

Marshawn Kneeland was selected by Jerry Jones' Dallas Cowboys at No. 56 in 2024 following a standout career at Western Michigan.

He recorded 26 total tackles, five tackles for loss, four quarterback hits and one sack across 18 games over two seasons. The defensive end appeared in nine games this campaign, recording 15 tackles, one sack, two tackles for loss and six quarterback pressures.

Cowboys players will wear specially designed helmet decals in Kneeland's honor. They will also wear special T-shirts before Monday's Raiders game and when the team hosts the Philadelphia Eagles on Nov. 23. It will be Dallas' first game at AT&T Stadium since Kneeland's death.
