Former NFL coach Chip Kelly returned to the league earlier this year after a brief stint as the offensive coordinator of Ohio State last year. However, Kelly's tenure with the Las Vegas Raiders didn't last a full season, as he was fired last week.Following Kelly's firing, NFL Network's Tom Pelissero accused the veteran OC of botching plays during his tenure that led to a 2-9 start to the season. On the "Rich Eisen Show," Pelissero alleged that Kelly would call plays outside of the game plan, which often confused the Raiders players, especially quarterback Geno Smith."There are all kinds of different stories, Rich, about just the dysfunction of the Raiders' offense. There were times, I was told, where Chip Kelly was repeatedly botching the play calls," Pelissero said. "Where he's supposed to be, for instance, tagging a motion on a play so the receiver is on the left, not the right, he forgets to say it, so Geno Smith is going to the line of scrimmage, and going 'This doesn't look right,' and they're trying to run a play."It happened on a third down in the game the other day. There's times where Chip, I was told, on several occasions called a play that was either not in the game plan or not installed at all."Kelly had repeatedly signed a three-year deal with the Raiders in February, earning $6 million annually, making him the highest-paid coordinator in the league.Raiders coach Pete Carroll admits giving Chip Kelly "leeway" amid botched calls allegationsChip Kelly's tenure was marred with botched plays, but Raiders coach Pete Carroll stuck with the veteran OC because of his success in the role with Ohio State last year. Carroll acknowledged the "leeway' Kelly got because of his record at Ohio State.“I gave Chip a lot of leeway because he’s got an extraordinary background and history, and he had such a phenomenal season coming out of Ohio State last year, so we wanted to give him his due and all that,” Carroll said. “As we continued to grow and come together, we just couldn’t get there. So, I wish him the very best, and I like him and we got along great, but we had to make a tough call.”The Raiders' first game without Kelly this season will be against the Los Angeles Chargers on Sunday.
