We may see Travis Kelce on the football field longer than anticipated. That’s what beat writer Pete Sweeney believes. On X, the longtime reporter says:

“I think we all came into this season thinking that this would for sure be Travis Kelce’s last season, but he’s been playing like he has year(s) left.”

After 12 games this season, Kelce has 719 receiving yards and five touchdowns. One more score would mark his highest total in a single season since 2022, when he found the end zone 12 times. He needs 105 more yards receiving to surpass his total from a season ago.

There was widespread speculation that his 13th season would be his last, with the 36-year-old not posting the kind of numbers he had in years past. After posting seven straight 1,000+ yard receiving seasons, Kelce has failed to reach that milestone in back-to-back seasons. He needs 281 yards to get to that mark in the Chiefs’ final five games of 2025.

Kelce has been selected to the Pro Bowl 10 times in his illustrious career, while being a First-team All-Pro tight end on four occasions. His current contract expires at the end of this season. In 2024, he signed a two-year extension with the Chiefs for a reported $34.25 million.

Travis Kelce’s future in question

No one is questioning Travis Kelce’s legacy as a Hall of Famer, but his future is a different story. Former Chiefs quarterback Chase Daniel says that he’s showing no signs of slowing down.

However, with the team’s playoff hopes in serious jeopardy, Kelce may be motivated to return for another year.

The Chiefs are third in the AFC West with a 6-6 record, a game behind the Buffalo Bills and Jacksonville Jaguars in the playoff race. While he’s incurred his share of injuries and has hinted at retirement in the past, he may want to come back. That could be because he doesn’t want to end his career on the sour note of missing the postseason. NFL Network currently has its playoff probability at 38%.

Kelce currently leads the Chiefs in receiving yards by a considerable margin. Rashee Rice is second on the team with 486 yards to go along with his five scores. The Chiefs are three games behind the Denver Broncos for the division lead, with three of their final five games against AFC West opponents.
