There’s no animosity between Brock Purdy and Mac Jones. That’s according to the man who guided the San Francisco 49ers to a Super Bowl appearance in the 2023 season. Jones had filled in admirably for Purdy while he was out injured, leading many to speculate the former New England Patriots QB could take the starting job permanently.Purdy says that he and Jones fully support one another.“He’s the man. I think our relationship and us getting close throughout the year and both of us just having each other’s back,” said Purdy on Tuesday.Purdy credits the former Alabama pivot for stepping in during his absence and keeping this team in the playoff hunt.“Him going out there and keeping our team alive, making plays and balling out, it was really cool to see,” added Purdy. With Purdy recovering from a shoulder injury earlier this year, Jones boasted a 5-3 record as the team’s starter, completing 69.9% of his throws. He’s tossed 13 touchdown passes this season with only six interceptions.Purdy has won his last three starts, failing to toss a single pick in two of those outings. Even with a record of 9-4, though, the Niners are clinging onto the final playoff spot in the NFC, two games above the Detroit Lions. They are in a three-way tie for first in the NFC West but have played one more game than the Seattle Seahawks and Los Angeles Rams. The 49ers are on a bye week with their next game being on December 14th at Levi’s Stadium against the Tennessee Titans.Brock Purdy should benefit tremendously from bye weekWhile a bye week may not be ideal for a team on a three-game winning streak, it could be a huge benefit to their $265 million quarterback. While the team is winning with him under center some believe he’s not fully healed from his injury. He’s tossed three interceptions with five touchdowns over his last three starts. Meanwhile, he’s averaging just 187 yards passing, far off from what we saw of him during his 2023 Pro Bowl season. Despite his struggles in a victory over the Carolina Panthers his coach Kyle Shanahan shut down specualtion that he'd go back to Mac Jones.Having a week to rest while also having his share of game time of late could be the best of both worlds for Mr. Irrelevant. He’ll have time to rest his shoulder and be primed for a stretch run of critical games for his team.Meanwhile, he’s played the last three games, so he shouldn’t have a lot of rust when the Niners return to action. They’ll need him to be at his best if they are to return to the postseason, as they have a difficult schedule going forward. Three of their final four regular-season outings are against teams currently in a playoff position.
