1 day after indirectly calling out Caleb Williams, Ben Johnson makes feelings known on Bears QB's development

Ben Johnson took over the Bears in the offseason and teamed with Caleb Williams to give them their first winning record since 2018.

The coach praised Williams on Tuesday after a seemingly indirect criticism the previous day. The quarterback is in his second season after going 5-12 as a rookie.

The comments came during Johnson's Tuesday press conference.

"He continues to get better each week. I couldn't be more pleased with how he played last week," Johnson said. "His process is really good how he approaches the week. I think he will continue to ascend whether the stats say so or not."

Johnson criticized the passing attack on Monday following Chicago's 24-15 win over Philadelphia on Black Friday.

"We gotta fundamentally be correct," Johnson said. "Everybody has a role to play to get this pass game cleaned up. It's not where it needs to be. We're winning in spite of our passing game, not because of it, and none of us are pleased with that right now."

An unnamed veteran coach spoke to The Athletic's Mike Sando about Ben Johnson's impact on Caleb Williams.

"The No. 1 thing that Ben Johnson is doing with Caleb is teaching him how to play quarterback," the coach said on Tuesday. "He is not doing anything different with his throwing motion or anything like that. What is the down and distance? If it's second-and-3, we don't need to throw the fade here."

Williams threw for just 154 yards against the Eagles. He completed 17 of 36 passes with one touchdown in windy conditions at Lincoln Financial Field.

The Bears (9-3) are on a five-game winning streak and lead the NFC North. Williams has recorded 2,722 yards, 17 touchdowns and five interceptions through 12 games.

Chicago will face Green Bay on Sunday. The Packers (8-3) have won three consecutive games and are second in the division.
